Hi all I am pretty sure this penny is a wide am. It is not a pretty penny but it is an error. Thanks everyone.
I’d call it wide but I couldn’t tell you if that’s normal or not. They are not considered error coins but a variety.
Basically an error is a mistake made by the mint in production of the coins. A variety vid a coin that is slightly different in some way. Even thought the mint produced it, it’s not an error as it was designed that way. The mint produced wide and close AM coins. The mint didn’t make an error in their production. They produced them as they were designed. The mint produced coins that have incomplete planchets. That’s an error. Hope this helps you understand better.
Not an error, not a mistake. The Wide AM reverse dies left from Proof dies were used in business strike production. When they wore out or broke, production went back to the regular Close AM reverse dies. Getting the most for our tax dollars...yea for once
Yes variety as in "die variety" 1998,1999, 2000 they used the wrong reverse die from proof coins on some strikes. The 2000 wide AM is the most common to find out there the 1999 is the hardest one to find.
