My apologies for the Bad Photos and scratched up holder.... Just purchased for xf bid @ a show....
Is this a good deal? $260?? Is this a rare date like the guy selling it exclaimed? Or did i get taken to the cleaners?? IMAG2279_1.jpg IMAG2281_1.jpg IMAG2283_1.jpg IMAG2282_1.jpg
Sidenote: I know the reverse is hard to see due to the scuffed up holder, will try n get better pics @ home/ when I buff it

Sidenote#2- there was no sold examples on eBay in this grade, Numismedia list is $450xf & $300 vf..
    @Mainebill what say you?

Larrys opinion is very well respected with seated coinage, so even though I can't really make out the coin enough to grade or attribute it myself, I would accept it as stated.

I think I'm just gonna return it... It's hard to see in the scratched up slab. But outside I think I spotted hairlines.... Better safe than sorry

KEEP IT AS IS! "Color" is in at the moment; and the slab itself is probably scarce and at least fifteen years old. During that time, standards loosened. Coin looks at least XF-45 and closer to AU-50 than XF-40.

I should not try to cross it into another slab either as they may detail it. That may be why the VF price or the dealer cannot grade as VF is STUPID (unless he is net pricing it just to sell it).

It looks like a nice coin to me. It looks a bit dark. Some folks don't care for that, making them tough to sell. Just a thought from the images. Love the color.

That's the PCI holder generation which can be best-trusted, and nobody questions Larry Briggs' expertise with Seated coinage. If I'm seeing the reverse correctly on my phone, this is the 2-B Triple Date version.

It says 2-b right on the holder, as soon as I saw the hairlinez on both obverse AND reverse I returned it @ the show BUT , I have the guys phone# if I change my mind
Edit: greysheet bid was $250 for xf, fyi
    Tnx 4 the opinions

Those PCI signature holders are scarce. I had a Tomaska Franklin that sold for strong money. I also have a Chuck Daughtrey Wheat Cent. Both coins seemed to be accurately graded.

I don't like the look of the coin . . . the obverse looks nice to me, but I suspect the reverse has been polished and retoned.

I wasn't looking at the holder, I was looking at the coin. :p

To be honest I was scrambling trying to look up information for Heavy. But I was thinking it was the triple .
Running through the books and trying to pick facts off the images.
Heavy again I would of pulled the trigger on this one.
But we all have had these moments in collecting dang if ya do and dang if ya didn't .
I know Mike had his opinion but it seemed most of us would of snagged it.

well, I was at 1st, it had a lot going 4 it,... being unlike any toned quarter I've seen...the hairlines startled me & i got scared off & I played it safe and I'm not really all that into circ coinage anyway....
May I direct your attention to the gtg x 5 thread, which is essentially what I spent my $ on instead

The reverse does give me concern as well that it was cleaned and retoned. If I was comfortable with the reverse seeing it in hand I would jump on that one, but suspect that an in hand view would confirm what the picture is suggesting.

I think dip or cleaned and retoned. The reverse in particular looked unnatural glossy like overdipped. Color was attractive but looked like secondary toning. Pics tough to make out but from what I can see was an au 50 all day

Can't see the coin clearly enough to make fer-shure conclusions about grade and surface quality, but I trust PCI's opinion on slabs with the 10-digit serials using Futura-family typeface on the label. They were as good as any "major" TPG during this era, including detecting Details-worthy coins, so if they say it's XF and original I have the same level of initial confidence as I would inspecting a similar coin in a PCGS slab. Doesn't mean 100% confidence, but a predisposition towards trust.

Which would raise the question is that a straight 40 instead of a details AU? Netting may not have been the standard at the time but I would bet it did happen on occasion.
