I asked for ( and received ) the new David Bowers guide to Buffalo and Jefferson Nickels for father's day. What a great reference! I was wondering what are the titles of your favorite numismatic books? We all need to do research and I think we could share some titles and help each other to learn. My personal favorite is the PCGS Guide to Grading and Counterfeit Detection, although this new Jefferson book certainly is gonna be high on my list ( after I read it )!
Favorite books: (Great question). 1) The red book 2) Breen's encyclopedia (even tho he was a disgusting individual). 3) Cherry pickers Guide (Even tho they don't give proper credit to those who discover varieties, unless they are friends of the authors). 4) Most anything by Dave Bowers, including, but not limited to: American Coin Treasures & Hoards. 5) David Lawrence's Barber coin series.
red book pcgs grading book cherrypickers' guide books the comprehensive catalogue and encyclopedia of u.s. morgan and peace dollars by van allen and mallis and anything by q.david bowers...........and of course many coin mags grizz
USED to be the Red Book but now so full of errors it is just part of my collection that is never opened. I collect the Red Book and have no other coin books. I collect coins, not books or at least not coin books. If I want to find out anything about a coin I can ask her or other places on the web so why buy a book.
"Encyclopedia of US Gold Coins 1795 - 1933", Garrett and Guth You know you're a Coin Nerd when that's your coffee table book...
the obvious answer here is that if you do the research and read the book, you can potentially save thousands in mistakes. The book is just a cheaper way to get the proper knowledge and experience.
My two favorites are: The Jefferson Nickel Analyst by Bernard NAgengast & A Guide Book of Buffalo and Jefferson Nickels (The Official Red Book) by Q. David Bowers I just aquired them both recently based on a recomendation on another thread. Incredable resources for Nickel Nuts!!
What's my favorite book ? Boy Howdy, that's worse than asking me what my favorite coin is ! There's no way I could pin it down to just one book, so I'll list a few of them. Numismatic History of Mexico by Alberto Pradeau Zecca - The Mint of Venice in the Middle Ages by Alan Stahl Coins of Medieval Europe by Philip Grierson The Columnarios of Central and South America by Frank Gilboy The complete catalog of the Louis Eliasberg Sr. Collection.
Exactly!! There are many costly lessons to be learned " the hard way" in coin collecting... I wouldn't want my education in coins to be purely made up of personal experiences that turn out to be mistakes... I like to avoid mistakes whenever possible!!
My favorite book? Virginia Tokens by: David E. Schenkman Outdated, and incomplete, but it's the most comprehensive reference available on my area of interest.
For reference: - Red Book ~ I reach for it almost every day - VAM book - both Cherrypickers' Guides For history & general numismatic knowledge: - The Beauty and Lore of Coins, Currency and Medals by Elvira E Clain-Stefanelli ~ old, but a great read - The Expert's Guide to Collecting & Investing in Rare Coins by Q. David Bowers - Coin Collecting for Dummies by Ron Guth Those are just some of my favs. I have an ever-growing numismatic library, and wouldn't dream of buying a high-end coin without proper and elaborate research. Great thread!
What I've been looking at lately: The Expert's Guide to Collecting and Investing (Bowers) Ancient Coin Collecting Vol VI - Non-classical cultures (Sayles) Standard Catalog of World Coins 1801-1900, and 1701-1800 PCGS Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection Ottoman Empire Coins AH 1255-1336 (Uslu, Beyazit) I just checked the price on that one, cheapest was $450, up to $1500!
I don't have too many, but I'm constantly thumbing through my Red Book, my Charlton guide to Canadian coins, and my Klawan's ancient coins book. I have a small world-coinage book that I like a lot, but it's not nearly as intense as any of the Krause guides.
Cherrypicker's, redbook (even though its somewhat of a joke now), The VAM books, and the ANA grading standerds
I have a bunch that I like, but my favorites that I use the most are... -The Expert's Guide to Collecting and Investing in Rare Coins (Q. David Bowers) -Ancient Coin Collecting (Wayne G. Sayles) -Anceint Coin Collecting III: The Roman World-Politics and Propaganda (Wayne G. Sayles) -Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins 1795-1933 (Garrett and Guth) -Redbook
