Hi Dustin, Your coin is a very corroded bronze imperial issue of the late Roman empire. Maybe someone can narrow it down for you but it will be tough given the condition. As for value, probably only a few dollars, I'm sorry to say. It's still cool though to have a coin that is ~1700 years old Here are your images after cropping, rotating, and joining. It makes it easier for others to help you. You (or someone) can probably narrow it down a bit. My best guess is: Licinius II 317-324 AD Obverse: radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right Reverse: VIRTVS EXERCIT; two captives seated under a standard (standard probably reads VOT/XX)
Hello TIF! I apologize for my negligence in not optimally editing the photos. I really appreciate the reply Is there any way I could make the coin look a bit better safely?
No, you should leave it as it ts. If you try to clean it further, you will take it down to bare metal, not a good thing. And welcome to the forum.
I suspect TIF's guess is as good as we can offer. The type was used by other rulers and by several mints so it is not going to be easy to find an exact match. I'll tack on two different coins of the type from different mints with very different portrait styles. Both are Licinius II (as yours may or may not be). Neither is an exact match. There are many versions of this. Common late Roman Bronzes like these are not worth a lot even in decent condition so one that is only sort-of identifiable would struggle to be worth anything beyond a few cents as a genuine ancient coin. Most people would rather put a few more dollars (maybe $5-$20) and get one that is just a bit more legible.
You guys are super awesome, thank you so much. You bet I will be sticking around here As my knowledge increases, hopefully I can become a valuable contributing member
Welcome @Dustin Morgan . If any of us happen to have anything really heavy, I'm sure you can help us move it.
Certainly the end of the obverse legend reads IVNNOBC which narrows it slightly. There are two XX on the banner, so again this closes the net further still. The right facing radiate bust and almost certainty of the obverse reading LICINIVS with a break before IVNNOBC (because no room to fit another rulers name in ) are further help. Might there be a letter in the left field, from Op image looks like an S, but I haven't checked variations yet fully, but thought T and star were left field options?
RIC VII 271/2 STR or .PTR in exergue Or RIC VII 299 if T and F in left/right fields Most other variations are ruled out by the right facing radiate bust. The ivnnobc is helpful and almost certainty from the letters legible in the banner an XX Type, reinforced by lack of IVNNOBC RDC busts for VOT X.
