my LCS has this little fella and I was drawn to it. However, for the first time he's asking $25 over grey sheet. I passed today, but I'm thinking about going back. Would you pick it up for over greysheet??
From that image I couldn't make a call. Retail it's a 225.00 coin in Ef 40 I do love these older soap bars holders but from your image I'm not seeing it.
It's not a very good photo and only shows one side, but I would personally pass. But to better answer your question, why are you purchasing it? For resale? To fill a hole?
Retail is $225 and he's asking $150. That was why I'm on the fence. I kinda thought the combination of this coin and mint mark, with the old ANACS holder, makes me think it might be a decent deal?
I'm confused by your statement that you don't have a 51-O as a type coin. There are other coins that could fill the type set hole. Are you just saying that this coin would fill that hole, or are you specifically looking for a 51-O?
As a general rule, one cannot always expect to buy anything and everything at CDN levels, and focusing on doing so can end up causing more harm than good if one isn't careful. If you, as a collector, have an interest in this (or any) coin, the best thing to do, after comparing the price to general market ranges for type, grade, etc, is to ask yourself what it's worth to you, and if you are likely to get $X worth of enjoyment out of owning it. Also, don't try to convince yourself, just because a coin resides in a certain holder, that it is anything other or beyond what the coin itself tells you.
This is the only 3 cent silver that has a mint mark... I'm by no means an expert, but it's a semi-key. Correct?
51-O's are $40-$50 iN VG... I'd buy every one you had at $50 also... I'm confused. In your previous post, you said yourself that it's a $225 coin.
I've seen MS62 1851-O's with a flat strike. This one looks flat, but I bet it's accurately graded at XF.
I honestly don't know the specifics on keys and semi keys, but in a type set, you're not going for key or semi key dates/mints. In fact, you're often going for the most common one so you can get the best grade at the cheapest value. Type Sets are specific to getting one of each type of coin. The date and mint mark are generally irrelevant.
The price on coins like this are all over the place. Nice pretty coins sell for more than ugly ones. I don't know what this one is.
I'll try to get different images. I had to zoom in through the case today, and these tiny buggers are hard to capture any amount of detail.
At XF I expect most of the interior shield stripes to be still full, and some of the division between the outlines left. $150 ought to buy XF40 in a PCGS slab, but not an ANACS slab, even an old one.
37xxxx is ANACS from the early Amos Press ownership days. Grading was still pretty accurate. With 51Os, there are a lot of poor strikes out there that masquerade as low grade. You need to see the reverse. On a weak strike the 6 orbs and 2 bars within the C will be weak or missing, sometimes even part of the diamond itself. I see definite wear on two of the five points of the shield outline into the star, to me that's EF40. Now there are two more points that I can't see well enough to be sure of - so it could be as low as VF30...
