I'm not a lowball collector nor would I pay a premium for them. I just think it's funny how worn some coins get. Pretty sure the fad has passed, but anyways...

This one isn't so bad, but I'll start with an undateable SLQ :)

Then this one was so bad we had a long thread discussing what exactly it was...

The fad isn't over yet - there are plenty of lowball collectors. Here's one of mine, I also have a nice problem-free 1892-O Barber quarter. I'd grade it FR-02. Honestly if a coin's date/mm cannot be determined, it isn't a lowball, it's just roached. 1854 seated quarter obv.JPG 1854 seated quarter rev.JPG

It took forever with a 20x but I think this is a 1859.

The problem I have with lowball is that it's something that can be created. It's just a matter of causing additional "honest" wear and playing chicken with overdoing it, which might cause the coin to come back in a bag. I call it wear-sport.

My problem is that low grade coins used to be cheap album fillers, and now some of them command unreasonable premiums.
But, all of my low balls came from "cull lots" at ridiculously low prices, so I guess I can't complain too much...

It is an 1859; that is the only year that did not have the shield on the reverse between the top of the wreath.

A low ball doesn't count if you can't determine the year & MM

Not only that, but people talk in public about "creating" them for their Registry sets. I'm kind of over the Lowball thing myself, and will have a new avatar soon.
