Richard, this is a nice coin. Paddy is really good at Nickels and I would listen to what he says when it comes to them. (I have a lot of respect for his knowledge) I see you sent an email to Wiles.. if you dont hear back let me know and I will call him regarding this.
Rick pulled this one out to show you. An 1942 S Ya think they got their money's worth out of this die? I know some that would say that's been cleaned ....no just polished to death..... the die that is.
That crack in the hair, looks like the Nile River .... I did here from Mr. Wiles and he thinks it could be the MDO, so I asked him about the master doubling and how far it's goes around the coin ...
Thanks Jim for your confidence and the post above. I wish I could say definitely it's not MD however I cannot . Now that I've have had some time to relax and my eyes are not so tired..... I have studied several nickels and found the same sort of doubling . Some looks shelf like others don't . One reason I posted the coin above is to prove a point. The point is that these dies were worked hard. Even though they struck softer blanks (copper/silver/manganese ) . Looking at your images comparing them to mine I'm more in the MD and die deterioration as a cause. Even though some of the doubling doesn't look shelf like. However I will say this anything is possible with the war nickel series. Look at the 43 P alone has over 75 known rpm's . I wouldn't discount your find completely I be very happy to be proven wrong in this case.
Right now according to Mr. Wiles, he thinks it MDO ( Master Die Obverse ) . But according to the Coneca Charts, that runs K through 8 ..
Here's the message I received from Mr. Wiles: Richard: All I see is the MDO. I have suspended my attribution services until Sept. 1, 2016, due to summer activities. I would be happy at that time to give it a first hand look. Thanks, James Wiles
I had the one I own at the fun show a couple of weeks ago and it's DDO-001 from Coneca . You need to check the bottom of that " D " ( mint-mark ) the bottom looks doubled .
I just went through the threads and the images on some are different now, then the one I have . I'll post them .
