I was just wondering how big the ANA annual shows are. I plan on goin to the one in Milwawkee this yeas since its only 4 hours from my house. The reason im asking is to find out how much money i should bring. I mean, im only 13, and so i couldnt bring a check book or anything, but how much cash should i take? i mean, i could take up to a grand, but i wouldnt take that much if it wasnt neccisary. Any suggestions?

This is very funny, I was just talking to my wife about an early birthday president-- a trip to Milwaukee!
Bring as much as you can, there will be tons of great stuff there.
Also, be sure to register for the YN program! They will have a seminar on collecting, lots of younger and older kids (older & younger than you are) and they give a lot of great stuff to the attendees.
My son went to the one in NYC about 8 years ago.
There will also be a lot of people there that you have only read about.
I understand that Ken Bressett & Dave Bowers will be there.
So, I hope to see you there.

CD, if you can take that much to the show, then the more power to ya.
I've only been to the FUN show, for my largest show, once and that was an awesome experience. Hope to see you on the bourse.

BTW are you going to be at the MidAmerica show this weekend?

BIG, bring all the cash you can spare. I went to last years in Denver with $1200 inmy pocket and spent nearly every cent at probably 20 to 30 different tables. Be sure to buy a World's Mint Passport and visit all the mints that will be there for a coin from that country and a mint stamp, it makes a great collectors item, don't forget to look at the exhibits and visit the BEP station and watch the spider press in action making intaglios. Spend more than one day.

It will be one of the largest shows of the year. If your want list includes $1000 or more in coins and you are ready to buy them then go ahead and bring it all because the coins you are looking for will be there.

otoh, if you are traveling with a parent then you can let them write the checks and you can pay them back. Be aware that cash is much more readily accepted than checks by most dealers who don't already know you.

    Have fun!

Just a word of caution. Usually, but naturally not always, the larger the show, the more you'll pay for coins. The reason is just logical. If a large coin show, many dealers have traveled a long distance, stay at hotels/motels, pay for meals, gas, wear and tear on vehicals or use rentals and just lots of other items. This means they must make money somewhere to cover this and since they are selling coins, guess what the prices will reflect. I've been going to coin shows for well into the 30 or so year area now and that is what I've observed. Smaller, local shows with local dealers can and do save on most of those cost since they usually live within reason of the show locations.
Now if your in the Wisconsin area and depending on which side of Milwaukee you may note there are many shows in the Chicago area that are much better with prices. Now as an example of another coin show there is one this weekend at a place called the Rosemont Convention Center here in Illinois. It is from June 21 to 24 and will have at least 175 dealers from 30 different states. Since this is 4 day show the dealers will be staying at local hotels and they are really, really expensive in the Rosemont area. This is the area where they have the Allstate Arena, Rosemont Theater, numerous hotels/motels. The Covention Center is so big there are usually several types of shows going on at the same time. It's $5 to get in and about $11 to park. Prices of coins usually reflect the areas high cost.

One more thing. Do not bring a large amount of money with you. Just in case you get caught up in a buying frenzy with out thinking of what your doing. Remember since most of the dalers will be from far away places your ability to return something you don't want decreases dramatically.

I agree. I would only bring what I was willing to completely spend, because it is easy to get caught up in a spending spree while at a show.

My best advice is to not rush any purchases and look at as many coins as you can. A large show is an excellent opportunity to learn by viewing many coins that you may not normally get to see. Begin looking for differences in grades and looking to understanding the look of cleaned coins.

You will have a great time in Milwaukee, as it will be one of the largest shows of the year. There will be literally hundreds of dealers, great educational exhibits, and rare coins on display, like one of the 1913 Liberty Nickels.

Look for me in the ANA area. Hope to see you there!

There will be quite a few heavy hitters at the show. I ate lunch with Ken Bressett today. That man has more numismatic knowledge in his pinky than most of us do combined. He knows an incredible amount of information about nearly any coin series.

What do you expect from a guy that manages the Red Book from year to year. Last year, I had a brief conversation with him during lunch at Summer Seminar. Great guy to talk with.

I mean, i COULD get a checkbook from my bank account if i wanted to..... Im so happy right now, because i acully have money to spend on coins this year, got myself 3 summer jobs! =)

Yes, Mr. Bressett is a very nice man. I have talked to him on the phone a few times. I'm hoping he'll be at the ANA show in 2008 in Baltimore, MD. I know I'll be going to that one. I've never been to any of the ANA Conventions either so, I'm looking forward to it. Let us know how you liked it.
