Hi, found this quarter today and, being fairly new to the hobby, do not know what this issue is. You can see the lines running SW to NE starting in front of Washington's profile, running thru some hair and the ear, and extending past the rear of the profile.Any help is greatly appreciated Image85.jpg Image86.jpg Image87.jpg Image88.jpg Image90.jpg Image89.jpg Image95.jpg Image92.jpg

this is from the die being ground and polished to remove something from the die , it was probably die clash marks that was removed

Thanks I thought the same at first but would that also explain the lines through the hair and deformity of the ear by the same lines?

yes the die was heavily ground and polished. this also removed part of the original design . the area in front of the eye is also missing

Looks like feeder finger die scrapes to me. Compare here:

Thanks I checked it out and I think it's exactly that. Im going to hang on to it after all at the very least as a reference. These things have any interest?

Not unless you are trying to put together a set of all the different types of errors. It's really nothing more than die damage. I kept one just to have the type. I don't think you could sell it. They're fairly common.

Jay this does imitate feeder finger scrapes but in this case it looks more like from a over polished die. feeder finger scrapes don't usually remove very much of the die's design and polishing does remove some of the design from the die. look in front of the eye at how much of the die design is missing in this area .

don't throw her back too soon . it looks like you have a interesting coin here . I didn't look at all the photos at first and took another look. the photo of the rev. shows that your coin has had a heavy die clash and some of the remnants of the clash remains on the reverse side. usually when a die is polished it removes about all of the clash marks.

This is not intentional die abrasion. This is accidental die abrasion associated with die scrapes. Most likely inflicted by the feeder mechanism. Definitely worth keeping, in my opinion.
