I am a die hard type collector and love getting different denominations and sizes of coins. Each coin has their own history and have a type set allows a broad overview of US coinage. Is anyone else working on a type set? Cameron Kiefer
Yep slowly filling up my Dansco 20th Century Type Album, while finishing up my Peace Dollar and Morgan Dollar Sets Recently finished up my Walking Librty and Franklins and just added the 2002 Kennedy Silver Proof to complete the Kennedy oh and then there's the Statehood Quarter Proof and Mint Sets... Oh yeah and a "Year of Birth" mint set for all in my family and then there's . . . . Oh well guess you get the picture !
Touch Typing Well, actually, no, to answer your question, I am not working on a US Type Set. However, I did once pursue a set Philosophers: small Greek silver coins, drachma and obols, that represented a day's wages for a citizen at assembly or a rower on a galley or a soldier in the field, from the towns and times of famous philosophers. The Athenian Owl covered a lot of them, as did the Alexandria tetradrachma. I never got Pythagoras nailed, but I got Thales, Demokritos, Aristarchos, Hipparchos, Archimedes, Zeno, Zeno, and Zeno, and about a dozen more. I think my jewel was a nice didrachma from Akragas from the time of Empedokles. As much as I honor Aristotle, of course, and as cool as many of the others were, I think that Empedocles was my favorite. He lived to be 100 and died exploring Mt Aetna; he used a water thief to prove that air is a substance, that is has weight, and occupies space. The coin was just plain choice: well struck, nicely worn, good eagle, nice crab, and a good price coming and going.
Marotta, I have begun to appreciate ancients more and more as I learn about them, but for the time being I am a US coin guy. Cameron Kiefer
almost finished with a 20th century type set, and i want to finish out an odd denomination type set. B.
Ahh, my type set is my pride and joy! I get so excited when I get a new type coin. I have the Dansco type album for 19th and 20th century types. I've been at it less than a year, and I think I'm doing a pretty good job! All moderns in BU, the rest in the best grades I can afford, possibly to upgrade later. I'm working on filling my four commemorative half holes with classic commems in circulated grades...these are my first classics! I eagerly await the arrival of a three-cent nickel and Stone Mountain commem I just bought.
Yes i am working on 2 different type sets one is a good one with 1/2cents-gold and the other is the same thing only with more history it is a holed type set. It's cheap to do and it is harder than you think to finish it.
:alien: Yes as a matter of fact, looking for a young matron head large cent in fine or better and a c/n indian in fine or better. Lakeland Collectorama coming up next weekend, hope to find both there, will advise. Keep it healthy.
I am working on a type set too. It goes slowly. That is because I prefer cameo proofs and I already have most of the 20'th century types. I just bought a twenty cent proof that wiped out my coin budget for the whole year!
Yeah, it sure took me out of the market! I've looked for one for several years. This one fell in my lap when a collection was being liquidated. It is all original. It is a 1878, the last year of the series. It was a proof only year with the Redbook saying only 600 were minted. These older proofs are often champagne color, this one was that way but turned more red. I am working on buying a digital camera but for now only have a scanner. The scan just doesn't do the coin justice.
Nice coin Carl, in all my years of collecting I have only had 1 a PCGS graded F with VF details. There were some light scratches on the reverse. Thanks for sharing. Jess
I know this is an old thread I resurrected but I searched for threads and I found this one to add my .02 cents worth. I ran into a very nice coin shop on my way through Beaumont, Tx. I was looking around the back room and noticed some used Dansco albums on the shelf. I asked how much he was asking for them and he said $5.00 a book. All three books I bought were in great condition and had all the plastic sleeves. I also noticed a Capital 20th Century Type Set plastic holder that he sold to me for $10.00. I am looking forward to inserting some nice examples in this holder and hanging it in coin closet.
I was I bought a Dansco 7070 album and added a few coins... However, I've bought a house and we are getting ready to move int it and its consuming all my time and money, so I've not been buying many coins latley...
Slowly filling my Dansco 7070. I need two coins (a 1917 Type 1 Standing Liberty and a 1917 Type 2 Standing Liberty) and I'll have all my 20th Century coins. Need a few more copper coins (Coronet Half Cent, Draped Bust and Classic Large Cent, and a Type 2 Indian Head cent) to complete my cents. Those are my next major purchases.
Just finished my non-gold 1900-1964 type set. I have a few coins in my 19th century non-gold set, but since I collect world as well as ancient coins, the going is pretty slow on that front.
ok, here's my type set: I have a capitol plastics holder that I am filling with XF and better key date coins. Needless to say, there are many holes left to fill. I have been working on it for over 5 years though and consider this my life's work in progress. I don't think I ever look forward to completing it, the chase is too awesome! My avatar is the 3-leg that occupies the buffalo on plain hole. I also have a nice 32-D Washington, but most of the filled holes are definately more recent stuff. an 81-S Type 2 Susie B, a 1995 double die Lincoln, a 1997-P Matte Proof Jefferson and others. After my kids, it is my pride and joy! P.S. - Don't even ASK me what I am gonna do for a 1901-S or a 1913-S Barber quarter, cuz I am gonna have to win the lottery first!
I just finished these collections, i wouldnt really call them type sets, but still. I just finished 1946-present roosevelt dime w/ proofs, the 1938-date jefferson nickel with proofs, and JUST about finished with my mercs, which i just need the 16-d. I have all of the 42 overdates, both in ANACS VF-30 slabs. edited - please remember forum rules
