    Well,

After about 10 years without buying a coin I bought a 1909-S VDB today.(all my coins/gold/silver were in my parents old safe until I drove to Austin and got them all from them). Grade is MS60 BN from PCGS. Think I got a pretty good price as I bought it from a friend for $1000 (he thought it was worth alot more, but I talked em down). I'll post a pic when i get home :)

BTW, this completed my early lincoln cent book.

    Congratulations on a great purchase.
    Was it slabbed?

yep, slabbed... But even if it wasn't i would know it was authentic. I've known the guy I bought it from for 25 years (my whole life).

Still, it is nice to know from an authority that it is real.

Are employees of TPG's the only people who are able to authenticate coins?
I was under the impression that dealers and collectors also possesed this knowledge.

I am not sure if your comments were tongue in cheek or not, but, having seen a bunch of really good fakes, I still prefer to have them guaranteed as genuine.
Sure, I have picked out some fakes (in dealers' cases) and had a good time doing it, but I cannot say for sure that I will spot every one that is a fake.
A lot of money= a lot of risk.

congrats on a nice purchase of a fabulous coin! I once owned a 1922 plain die #2 NGC xf-40, and I loved it. The TPG graded ones are always easy to sell because of the strong constant demand for the coins and the recognized authenticity.

Nope, he already sold most of his coins away besides this one, a 1916-D Murcury dime and a few others. His father got this 1909-s VDB in 1949 for $10
