I don't collect foreign coins, so I was hoping someone could answer a question I have on some coins I found. I was in an old antique shop that was going out of business and had an old box of foreign coins for 10 cents a coin. So I went through and picked oput all the ones that looked and felt like silver to me. I found about a dozen Phillipine 10 and 20 centavos from US "occupation" days. I also found a lot of 10 Sentimos that appear to be silver, but I have no way of knowing for sure. The dates are from the 60's and 70's. Also, I found a lot of 50 Centimes from France from the early 1900's, most 1914-1918 dates, which I also think may be silver. If anyone knows I would be greatly appreciative. Thanks. Guy~
Any 10 Centavos & 10 Sentimos from the Philippines issued after 1945 are cupro-nickel,not silver. Aidan.
Thanks Aidan. I was affraid that would be the case. But, I was happy to find some US issues from the Philippines. I kick myself for not thinking to look for any bronze from the time. Guy~
The French 50 centime coins are silver, though I'm not sure of the percentage. I have a few, and since they are small coins, they might be around 80%, but it could be higher.
Guy,this is where the 20th. Century Krause comes in handy. There are some rare Filipino coins issued under U.S. rule. Aidan.
The french 50 centimes are 0.835 silver (0.0671 oz) from 1901-1920. The 10 and 20 Phillipino centavos from 1903-1945 are silver, purity varies by date. Ten centavo pieces from the 60's are copper-zinc-nickel.
