Unfortunately my grandfather used scotch tape to hold some coins in those blue coin books. There is some tape residue on the coins. Is there a safe way to remove this without damaging the coins value?
100% Acetone (NOT nail polish remover) for 10 minutes then a bath in distilled water. Do not rub the coins
Hi Janice and welcome to the fun. Acetone is our go-to coin crud remover. Don't rub your coins, just allow them to soak in the acetone a bit and see if you can't maybe roll a Q-tip or something over the residue. Good luck!
Yes, acetone (100% can be purchased at almost any hardware store) can safely remove tape residue without damaging or causing a coin to get a "details" label. As mentioned, wet a Q-tip in the acetone and after soaking the coin, gently roll the tip over the spot and it should easily lift the residue off. Rinse and "pat dry" to remove any possible water marks. Welcome BTW. Looking forward to seeing more posts from you.
I gave this a whirl on a peace dollar with old tape residue. Just for fun. Worked pretty well. Not an MS coin or anything. Here's really old before photos: And after photos from tonight:
