The core of the planchet, thus the coin, is softer than the surface, and when exposed to any type of acid, like vinegar, orange juice, etc. it will attack and eat the core more than the surface material, thus what you have.
Nitric acid if you are in a hurry. Ferric chloride takes a little longer ( you can use it to make printed circuit boards). Jim
