    Hi guys

I recently acquired a lot of late antiquity coins, this time I want to show one of my collection upgradings, Theodoric the Great, who was the king of the Ostrogoths until his death in 526 AD.

This is the coin that I have until now in my collection, a humble one, but with recognocible monogram:

This coin has been replaced by the next with perfect monogram, even with inverted S, in place of the normal (not retrograde) S:

Dont sure, but I think that the moustache of Thodoric is visible in his bust!

Really nice for the type VK. In my experience these little bronze monogram issues are far scarcer than the Theodoric monograms found on AR issues in the name of Justinian. When it comes to Ostrogothic types the only "common" ae monograms are of Athalaric and Baduela. The rest ... good luck.

If the rest are anything like that posted coin that would be one heck of a find. As I said before these are tough to find and normally not in very good condition. Here's a 9mm Theodoric ae example with the more typical monogram design:

Compare this with the far better AR quarter siliqua in the name of Anastasius (these are also found in the name of Justin I):

I just started collecting coins from the Vandals and the Goths. In fact, the new "Barbarians Rising" series on the History Channel has made it even more enticing. What I found is that collecting good quality specimens is VERY DIFFICULT and if you do find one, it is VERY EXPENSIVE :(. All the posted coins are really nice! Wish I had better luck finding these coins. Here are a few coins I picked up recently:

    Ostrogoths: Theoderic (493-518) AR Quarter-Siliqua, i.n.o Anastasius I, Ravenna (MEC-120; Metlich-44a)

    Obv: D N ANASTASIVS P P AVC; pearl-diademed and cuirassed bust right
    Rev: INVICTA ROMA; monogram

    Ostrogoths: Theoderic (493-518) AR Half-siliqua, i.n.o Anastasius I, Ravenna (Metlich-43a; MIBE-V77; MEC-117)

    Obv: D N ANASTASIVS P P AVC; pearl-diademed and cuirassed bust right
    Rev: Star within wreath
