I have been working on a set form Julius Caesar to Anastasius I , I am trying to obtain emperors, wives, children, Upshur's and etc. from that span, as of right now i have 141 coins as in my list shown. This year I am working on obtaining Julius Caesar, Pertinax, Britannicus, Magna Urbica, Pescennius Niger, Orbina, Eugenius, Johannes, Paulina and Plotina or one I have not listed at an affordable price. I actually bought a "want", yesterday afternoon. It's a fairly scarce emperor. But I will post it when it arrives. I still want a Fulvia denarius, I am just waiting for the right coin at the right price, to appear.
I seem to NEVER accomplish my goals. I always seem to see things on sixbid/ MA-shops and so deviate from original New Year's wantlist. Only promise that I will fullfil for 2023/ a high quality aureus/ and a MS-65 SS-Central America 1857-S Double Eagle
Want lists tend to grow in proportion to income in my view. I used to want 1 gold Byzantine, now own more than that and not even a main collecting area. Same with wanting a Cleo VII, a Vahran II, etc. My favorite line stolen from Star Wars and twisted to apply to us, "There is always another coin". No matter how bad you want one particular coin, a new shiny will get your attention after that. OP, complete you list I will guarantee you that another thing will grab your attention. We are addicts.
My collection spans from Caesar to Theodosius I's sons, and will ultimately consist of 150 coins. At this point, I'm sitting at 121/150, so still 29 to go. While I'm on the lookout for any of them, I suppose the top 5 that I most look forward to landing are: 1. Lepidus/Octavian Denarius - Last coin needed to flesh out both Triumvirates, too bad there are no bust coins of Crassus . 2. Antinous - Any type that implies the youth and looks. Imperial boy lovers make fascinating tales for the modern folk haha. 3. Didius Julianus - The most generally expensive individual among the persons that I still need, so it'll feel good to check this one off. 4. Shekel of Tyre - Last coin that I need to finish the "Biblical" subset within the collection. Overpriced IMO though, so it's difficult to pull the trigger . 5. Augustus Aureus - I want to have at least one example of each denomination somewhere in the collection, and I'm still missing an aureus. Figured, why not make it Augustus! But, considering my budget, this is a bit of an extreme outlier and probably won't happen anytime soon. Man, I wish I had your discipline. I am serious. I simply cannot maintain a want list, since it is whatever strikes my eye at the moment. Yesterday I purchased from a dealer friend a Lucilla sestertius, Parthian tetradrachm, Constantius II fallen horseman in superb grade, Indo Skythian tetradrachm, Ghengis Khan, and 3! Moneta reverse of Galerius. The week before that a solidus of Maurice Tiberius from same dealer and an Iowa commemorative half. I simply accumulate what strikes my fancy.
I've been a bit of a compulsive collector since childhood, and have went through everything from coins and baseball cards to fishing lures and casino chips. I always took a "Get whatever tickles my fancy" approach, and always found that I would eventually become a bit disenamoured with my collections. This is because my collections would always evolve into a sprawling mess of unrelated mediocrity. If I tried to tell somebody about my collection, there was no start/middle/end... but just a bunch of jumping around. I'd have sparse examples of a lot of different things, but nothing was ever complete. Plus, I'd always build up a bunch of cheap stuff that wasn't worth the effort of displaying or talking about, and barely worth the effort of even selling! (I'd end up purchasing 20 different $10 things that added bulk instead of one $200 thing that I actually appreciated) I found that getting rid of the fluff and being more focused in my goals would ultimately reinvigorate my interest. After going through this type of process multiple times (always at a financial loss), I finally learned that mapping the desired collection out beforehand was the right thing to do in my case........... but that's just me! Of course, this type of approach becomes a bit lackluster after you've knocked out all of the "low hanging fruit" from your list. It was a blast when I started, because every auction would have 20-30 different coins that I wanted. Nowadays, I'm lucky if there is even a single one . I've partially solved this problem recently by laying out a "British Celtic through Victoria" collection to work on, which will ultimately comprise 47 coins. It's a bit dangerous to start another collection before you've finished the last.... so maybe I'm not all that disciplined after all!
