Its still questionable to my eye...the dark" stains" around the device, the D had to had been hit if it is real But those stains as well placement would be enough to convince me to walk. Now the op sez he doesn't have a lot into it... so he was happy with the purchase. No worries here.
It's real close and not off enough IMO to give it the benefit of the doubt. Glad you posted that I was looking for it.
One of the guys at the coin club bought six blue partial Whitman cent folders from someone who just happened to come by and see if his coins were worth anything. 4 books of Indian heads and 2 1909-? Again partial books... 100/150 coins total. The guy said he was offered $200 once years ago. Now he's older and his kids don't have any interest so he was looking at selling. The books were passed around and when it finally got to me I noticed a 1914-D that looked really nice. I couldn't verify if real so I passed. One of the seasoned guys eyes/ears perked up and he said let me see that book again. It looked good to him and he said he'd buy the lot but didn't have the money on hand. Long story short, I spotted him the cash and he wrote me a check. I asked him IF he ever verified if it was real and he said no not yet...going on a few years now. I didn't get a good enough picture and the last time I checked with him he didn't want to dig it out and send me a picture. I'm going out on a limb and saying it wasn't real.
Absolutely. personally speaking, would agree with others about red flag on the mintmark that would stop me from buying the coin.
Not to beat a dead horse...but I know quite a few reputable dealers...who like myself are human and like myself subject to error. If the OP is comfortable with his purchase so be it... My major concern is the mm placement and damage. As well if you ever done any silver smithing and used a torch and flux to make the medal flow as well stick...there's areas where the flux has flowed ...making jewerly one then uses a polishing wheel to remove the stains left from the heat and flux. Again when I look at a coin I play detective looking over all clues to decide whether pass or play. Coin doctors can be very good at their work... and that said...I trust my eye esspecially on key coins to determine if I can trust a coin in question. And thats in hand not from a photo.
