My first half cent recently came in the mail and I'm liking the looks of it! It's an 1825, and I believe it is the C-1 (R.3) variety. Below are my (admittedly shoddy) pictures of the coin. Feel free to guess its grade based on my oh-so-beautiful images. There is one thing I'm curious about. Is it common for these to be in nearly perfect medallic alignment? I knew that it was common for the dies to rotate some, but I didn't know if the alignment that this half cent exhibits is particularly common.
My guess is VF35 but I tend to grade conservatively. The obverse looks XF40 but the reverse is why I chose the grade. Very lovely coin.
The rotation is pretty common for C-1, as if anything about it is "common." If Heritage is any indication, only about half of slabbed 1825's are attributed, but only a quarter of those attributed are C-1. PCGS has less than a dozen attributed, although I think the finest known (65) is in an unattributed PCGS slab. Excellent grab, particularly if you got it at the "normal" price for the grade.
NICE! I'll go VF-30. I started another thread in which I expressed my new found interest in EACs, so I'll follow this thread as I continue to learn.
Now you're really going to get the copper bug. Good grab though, I see it as VF-30. Here is the page from Breens encyclopedia; a good read if you're going to keep going on half cents.
I was on my phone earlier, and wanted to get home to the monitor before considering grade. VF-25 for me.
Congrats! I'd say VF30. Hey, I just bought my first Classic half cent, too. Let me know if I can post it here (don't want to hijack your thread Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Go right ahead!! And thanks for everyone's comments and grade guesses. I'll post the actual grade after the NBA Finals are over tonight.
Nice coin. Any Half Cent with grade of VF or better is a good fit for anyone who wants it and also for a type set.
