Congrats... Nice Denarius! Welcome to Roman Republic collecting! I love the rich history during this time frame. And, you got a GREAT start to that era!
I have one of those... Roman Republic M Porcius Laeca 125 BCE AR Denarius 19mm, 3.9g Obv: Helmeted Roma, LAECA behind, * under chin (Monogram for XVI or 16 Asses by this time) Rev: Libertas in Quadriga r, holding pileus and rod, crowned by Victory flying l. above, M PORC below, ROMA in ex. Ref: Sear 146; Crawford 270/1
I've collected U.S coins on and off for 25 years. As a kid, I always wanted a complete date and mint mark set of Walking Liberty half dollars. After I completed the set I have been wandering without a real collecting purpose. I thought I might try ancients as I do appreciate the history of all kinds. I was reviewing the site of a forum member and this particular coin caught my eye.
Congratulations. Pretty highfalutin start, and I don't mean that in any negative sense! My first ancients were in stark contrast.
Nice coin, OP but I'd really advise you to find another collecting area. If you keep collecting these we might end up bidding against each other and I already have enough competition from fellow CoinTalkers
@ Alegandron: Slide into the Roman Republic? I want to make an obscure condom joke, but I'm new here...
Yeah, those RR denarii are the hot thing here, which is why lately I've been focusing more on Imperial silver and other empires. Less bidding competition on those.
LOL, I was thinking along the lines of the water slides at theme parks with my Grandkids... LOL, but hey, no worries, I have a trashy mind too! LOL Hey, and I was cueing off Pish's "Slippery Slope" analogy!
