After doing some googling I did come across this add in and old newspaper. They look to be Proof coins Layered in 24Kt. Gold.
My questions are as follows, Are they Proofs and of course their worth? kennedyjfk24.kgold THIS ONE.jpg

No, they are not proofs. They are privately minted, gold-plated gimmicks. Their worth? Likely not worth the powder it would take to blow them to hell.

    Randy_K Love them coins...

The gold electroplate is extremely thin and has a nominal value on its own. This plated coin certainly wasn't $5.99 in 1971 dollars. It has just a novelty value.

BTW: The BEP, the Bureau or Engraving and Printing, doesn't make coins. It prints paper products like bonds and $1 to $100 bills. The U.S. Mint, on the other hand, manufactures coins and medals.

It is not even an engraving it seems to be punched into the coin. I would think that would degrade any coin! Thanks for your help!

Unfortunately, this gold plated nonsense shows up frequently. One of the disreputable TV coin shows periodically peddles gold plated American Silver Eagles.

Thousands of Kennedy halves of various dates were privately gold plated in the mid '80's for the sole purpose of selling as a "valuable" collectable to an eager public. As for the amount of gold it takes to plate a half dollar.. You could plate hundreds using a $5 dollar gold coin and still be able to spend it for $5. (ignoring gold value)
