Possibly my rarest emperor. Jovinus was a Gallo-Roman senator who rose up against Honorius with the help of several barbarian tribes. He was later betrayed by one of the tribes and handed over to Roman officials who executed him. Jovinus, Western Roman Empire AR siliqua Obv: D N IOVIN-VS PF AVG, Pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right Rev: VICTOR-IA AVGG, Roma seated left on stylized cuirass, holding Victory on globe and reversed spear Mint: Lugdunum (Mintmark: SMLDV); struck 411-413 AD Ref: RIC X 1716
Was a siliqua the 4rth and 5th century Roman equivalent of what a denarius would have been to a 1st or 2nd century Roman?
You could say that. Records of coinage from this period are scarce, but we do know that a Comitatensis received 2 Siliquae per day. That should give you an idea of what these were worth at the market.
My Siliquae continued! agnus Maximus AR Siliqua Trier mint 2.0 Grams Certainly the best looking reverse of any Siliquae that I have ever seen Constantius II AR Post Reform Siliqua Antioch mint 355-361 CE A very rare Argenteus of Emperor Valens! These coins would have been given to the troops and Imperial officials for donatives. To be continued......
I've some siliquae struck for Valens, but this one is certainly a mule (weight =1.39 gr in place of 2.20 gr). Argent - 1.39 gr - 18.5 mm - 11h RIC IX 46a-I Comments : Coin maybe sticked (to see the lack of upper left material). The weight is very low for the siliquae of this reference (weight waited around 2.10). In the legend of the observe, S (VALENS) is missing. The break E-N is not official. In the reverse, the bottom contain a non-existent mint-mark. Fiche de la monnaie sur la base Siliquae
still on my list.... but some nice lookin' coins guys, and congrats to you TC...one heck of a spree you had there!
Thanks, Chris. Over for a while now, I am afraid. (Back onto 'Moderns' for a bit.) It was good while it lasted, though.
