I have a roll of 1955 S dimes and all the mint marks are similar except one. It thinner and the center curve is not as straight across, and the serifs are not as close to the center as the rest. I couldn't find anywhere that they would have used a different MM. Is this one different from the others?
    Different one:

    Normal but maybe RPM South:

Just because they are all in the same roll doesn't mean that they came from the same dies. The position of the "thin S" is completely different from the "thicker S". Don't forget that the mintmark was punched into the die by hand at that time.

That's way different. Not a variety?

I wouldn't think they would be the same or from the same die, i was wondering if the MM was a different variety that was an error.

It's only an error if it is repunched. The MM punches would wear out and deteriorate, get flattened, spread, etc...

Or, it could have been the same punch, but weakly struck.

Sorry Tom but there are mint mark varieties and mis placed mm. I will refer you to varietyvista.com and if you research mint mark varieties and mis placed mm you'll find you're incorrect with your post . Yes true the punches did wear. It's also true punches were used from other styles .there are several varieties of the mm styles.

This mm may be a new variety as it touches the device. A misplaced mm. I would have it attributed .

Notice the base of the S touches the know on the base of the torch. If you compare this style S with the other one posted you'll notice they are the same s but this one does touch.....well to my eyes it does. downloadfile-134.jpeg

I'm very hopeful that this 1953 D that I have not received yet is the same case. Notice the D touches the left know of the torch . 7b8f4706-ce4a-44f1-9890-b9094273926a_fullsize.jpg

I don't think mine touches like your's does at the base. In my first post, the first picture is the S in question. It's not quite close enough to touch.
The last picture is one of the other MM's. Is this an PRM or just some MD? The right side of the curve looks like another portion of an S. Thanks again.

Well I exposed my ignorance. Glad to learn something new. Is it an error then if the MM is touching the date?

I went to variety vista but did not see a category for misplaced MM. I know it's the wrong place to ask but I have a 1964D penny with the MM touching the tail of the 9. I'll open a new thread tonight, Thanks Paddyman
