Hi guys, I managed to get this coin reserved for a very nice price! It's a Siliqua of Justinian I that was struck at Carthage after the reconquest of the province of Africa. Judging by the heavy weight it would be safe to assume that this coin was struck early on and not in Justinian's later reign. Amazingly they were still striking Siliquae into the "Byzantine" era. While there are some that were struck at Constantinople up until around the death of Emperor Maurice Tiberius in 602, they were used as ceremonial coins and most likely did not circulate very much. This was not the case for the Western provinces that were recovered by Emperor Justinian, silver coins were still the primary means of economic exchange and value. Gold had replaced silver in the east by the early 5th century, the last major emissions of Siliquae being under Emperor Valens and the last emissions for general Empire wide circulation being under Arcadius. Official Imperial Siliquae, and it's fractions, would continue to be struck until the late 8th century! I've even seen a few super rare Siliquae fractions of Constantine V from a few Italian mints! Here is a rare Siliqua of his minted shortly after the conclusion of the vandal war. Justinian I AD 527-565, AR Siliqua (15mm, 1.23 g) Carthage DN IVSTINIANVS PP AG; draped, cuir. and diademed bust r. VOT/MVLT/HTI in wreath; CONOS in ex Sear 253; very fine, toned Please post your coins of Justinian I. No barbarian coins allowed! For more on the Emperor who never sleeps, see

Very cool siliquae@Magnus Maximus !!! Lovely posts all!!! I still need to delve in this area, but something always seems to get in the way.... Justinian and Theodora -----I wonder if we should believe even a snippet of what Procopius says in the 'Secret Histories'
@Mikey Zee You mean the part were Justinian is a demon who caries his head while running through the palace at night? I think the worst we got from the Justinian Dynasty was Justin II, who reportedly ate two of his servants!
Yep, @Magnus Maximus, that's part of what I was referring to...but I never heard Justin II ate two of his servants....hope he didn't serve them for dinner
