So, I'm looking closely at a 2005P Mint set the other day and lo and behold a Best of Variety doubled die at the statue column. And through the cello it appears an outstanding strike. It would not work for me to take photos ( sorry, green18 ) but rest assured I am seeing this. My question is, would you break it out or leave as is? Worth more as part of the set, so leave alone? Someone mentioned here that the TPG's do not grade whole sets anymore? Thanks for the input.
You've reminded me...I've been meaning to get some photos of the Housatonic Line in Canaan, Ct. Only a few miles away from me. The original station burned many years ago when they had a eatery and some shops in it, but they rebuilt again as it was originally.
Thru the cello? If I can do it Tommy, you can. Although this is only a struck thru, yours sounds much more significant! Don't make me come over there and do it for you!
I would leave it as-is. A Best Of variety will be sought by specialists who don't need a slab to identify it, and having it as part of a Mint Set is about as cool an upsell as it gets. That said, if there is a component of great Condition Rarity - with a 2005, probably "clearly the highest-graded example" would be necessary - you may need to consider a slab.
Thanks Dave. I am loathe to break it out just to find something I cannot see through the cello that might downgrade it in the end. You are bound to make me try. Trouble is, these lay up against the column and are hard enough to photograph as they are outside the cello. And I just don't have a photo set up, or even a cell phone, just my scanner.
