I know this isn't an error but most of my cherrypickers, I'm guessing, watch this thread 1864 L or not? I bought it and am waiting delivery so no other pictures. I'm about 90% positive it is an L variety but just curious what y'all see.
When you get the coin post pics & refer to this thread. I'd like to see how it turns out. I see your argument with the bust line but where the L should be is very worn or maybe a bad photo or both. If it is an L it's a shame the coin is so badly worn. I don't mean that to sound negative.
The bust is used as a deciding factor alot when being slabbed/graded and it's too worn to see the L. There are alot of them slabbed by ngc and pcgs that are labeled an 1864 L, even though you can't see an L. I will def post pics here when I get it.
I know what an L is. Your pics which I'm sure is the sellers pic just doesn't do it for me. I just want to see a better pic before judging to harshly.
Got the coin today. Still hard to tell! The gap between the 1 and the bust is typical for with L varieties. Idk....i bought it with the intention of giving it to my brother-in-law. He wants one but can't afford it. I just can't tell for sure. I just don't want to tell him wrong.
I'm thinking its a definite possibility. Its really worn & being a photo not in hand makes it difficult to be sure. Keep in mind I'm no expert, but was being pretty anal the other day about it. Depending on what you paid for it (hope not much) you may have made a decent gamble on it. My rule I go by when it comes to a coin I'm not sure about but want to take a gamble on. Don't spend more than your willing to lose or more than I would give somebody in ratty clothes begin for money in front of the QT/convenient store.
I've got like 11 bucks in it delivered so no biggie if it's not. Any other markers that are exclusive to the L?
To be fair here is my 1863 (been posted on CT before) Its not an L but compare to yours. My bust line is close to the 1 than yours.
If your OK with it all that matters. I paid $20 for one in pic. Wasn't sure if was real thought maybe was cast. Turns out its real. So 1 gamble out of a few that paid off.
The fact that your thinking about your in law is great. The only thing my in laws give me is a headache. I'd be OK if an in law gave me a coin or paper money for that matter in any condition.
Ya he got me into it and I've gotten much deeper/addicted in numismatics than he did so I always throw any extras his way.
It's addictive, have a little everything. Recently got hooked on ancients. When I get tired of a type I change directions for a while. Sooner or later I circle back around to it. Ancients so many different varieties if you will, I think I'll be there as long as I can afford it.
Ya, ancients..... Don't even get me going in that direction. They're very appealing to me. They seem like a big ol world of possibilities. I'm not ready lol
They're great if your really into history. Have to pay attention what & who you're buying them from. Met a couple collectors, sellers here on CT.
