Grade? Has it been improperly cleaned, etc.?

3-E, I think. Later die state - 7, rim nearby, and N in ONE crumbling. The pics are a tad overlit - the better for attribution :) - so what I see as possible cleaning (crud caught in the tight areas, some places fields "cleaner" than they ought to be) could be an effect of the imagery. Slight circulation to my mind, no worse than AU55.

    Thanks @SuperDave.

Any idea on pricing? Does $225 sound reasonable?

(I'm on the buying end, not selling)

    Don't pay more than $150.

I attributed and evaluated the grade based on available online information, not personal expertise, so I hesitated to recommend a price. Too few records of sales exist. Heritage has 26 3-E's, including 7 AU's, going back 10 years. If we assume AU55 which may be conservative - based on that very small sample indicate you should get a coin in a "righteous" AU50-55 slab for $225.

How much circulation did these pieces have back then? The reason I ask is that I have one of these coins with what appears to be considerable wear. It is holed and if worn as an amulet the wear may have come from simply hanging around a person's neck.

This issue was never well struck, and the details look full UNC to me. Unfortunately, the coin looks lifeless, and definitely appears to have been cleaned.

I would grade the coin UNC Details.
