See, this is why no one respects most TPGs

DGS did an excellent job of grading on the Lincolns I've seen. I would buy any of their slabbed coins and be confident in the grade.

I believe Mike Ellis worked at Dominion. I never saw anything this bad from them but have not seen many coins. IMO the company with this holder is one of the bottom feeders.

The attractively toned SE in PCI slabs were from the Chattanooga company before it was sold.

I just bought a Merc in an old PCI holder for too much money. I usually lose financially on these purchases, but I can't help myself -- so much fun buying toned coins in old holders from junk TPGs!!!!

So do you agree with the grade assigned by that "junk grading service?"

From what I have read/heard/seen there was a period from 1990-1994 when the coins in PCI Green and Red labels such as yours were considered TOO conservatively graded. In fact, dealers were bragging about how many up grades they could get and how many "red label problem coins" they had cracked and received "straight grades" at NGC or PCGS!

I personally don't use the word "junk" for any grading service - even the fly-by-nights as all of us here have stories to tell about EVERY TPGS.

I have heard from a few well known dealers that they have had the best success at crossing old pci slabs to pcgs. One guy even said he had a vf pci jump to an au pcgs once

I agree with you -- "junk" isn't the right word. I haven't received this coin yet, so I'll see what I think of it in hand. I paid well above PCGS or NGC list price, so I am certainly hoping it is undergraded. That is exactly what makes buying coins from these less established or defunct TPGs so much fun. As I mentioned, on average, I usually lose out, but it is fun taking a gamble.

Also - Do you think I should send for cross to PCGS in the current PCI holder, or crack and submit raw? I just cracked and submitted a different PCI coin today.

Maybe the thread title was a bit overstated. I have a respect for NGC and PCGS, but don't blindly take their word for it. If my eyes and their grade differs, no sale. I did recently buy a trade dollar in an old ANACS slab, but a second party checked it out for me first.

I'm going to disagree. I'm the OP, and I'm also a big believer that words mean things. The title does NOT say all TPGs are junk. The title says people do not respect *MOST* TPGs.

Think about how many TPGs exist. I think there are probably over a hundred, but the only two people give a lot of respect to are the two you mentioned. If my belief that there are over a hundred TPGs is correct, then only 2% are well respected. ANACS is a distant second in most peoples' eyes, so we'll be generous and call it 3%. Thus, MOST TPGs -- by a long shot -- are NOT respected.
