Another of the types minted during the Social War: Quintus Titius, AR denarius, 90 B.C.

I recently read Philip Matyszak's "Cataclysm 90 BC: The forgotten war that almost destroyed Rome" about the Social War between Rome and her Italian allies and decided to add another of the types struck during the war(already having the extremely common L. Calpurnius Piso Frugi's denarius and most recently, as). There is some debate as to what the obverse of this coin depicts, Crawford lists it as simply "bearded head right" but other sources traditionally list it as Mutinus Titinus(likely a pun on the moneyer's name), a "phallic marriage deity". There were certain rites associated with this god that were supposedly performed by Roman brides but. in the spirit of keeping this forum family-friendly, you'll have to look the specifics up for yourselves.

Excellent coins. I especially like the first Titurius Sabinus one, one of the types high up on my want-list.

Carthago Does this look infected to you?

Nice coin, Spork et al. I'm not sure what the bust is and I'm not around my library at the moment. Sort of a mix of Jupiter, Mercury and Pan maybe. A hybrid deity.

Here's my addition to the thread.

You need to put your Pegasus on a diet. He must have enough cholesterol to kill a blue whale. Lovely coin @red_spork . What an awesome acquisition.

That's a really nice example, spork. This type is always eye-catching. Is there an antecedent for this style of slightly porky Pegasi? I notice that Volodya's is more svelte than is typical.

I love the toning / colo(u)ration of your coin Pish. I have a couple denarii with this tone, and they always stand out in my albums. Nice.

Mine is the ordinary Bacchus version but has the same horse. I was taught in college that many times when something is presented unclearly as to origin it meant that it was hard to clean up for high school use. I believe that Augustus shared many of the same desires to clean up the old ways which explains why the temple of Mu-Ti was torn down under his watch. There is similar lack of certainty regarding the origin of the name Titus and that meaning was changing by the time he came along.
