Before soaking this new sestertius in pure distilled water I decided to post it because it's clear. The obverse shows the full expression of Alexander Severus'face and eyes. The reverse has Mars holding a Trophy and a scepter. The coin weighs 19.62 g. Hope you enjoy it on this Saturday.
Is it a good idea to soak a coin in the cleaning process?? I have a few I am playing with and so far I have made sharpened OAK dowels and scraped most of the crust and dirt off the coins with these.
I doubt anyone here is adverse to a little 'soaking' if you are referring to water, distilled or otherwise...since it will only draw out the salts and remove the loose dirt.
Thank you. I was thinking of distilled water which should take out most of the mineralization out of the coins. I am just getting started in this fascinating area of coin collecting and my next step is to get some good reading material to identify these coins.
