The two griffins and deer trapezophoros is no longer at the Getty Villa: "...it was part of the looted antiquities depicted on the Medici Polaroids and was returned to Italy along with the other objects once it had been determined that they were illegally obtained."
Ah, well the, does anyone know where it is? (I haven't been to the Getty in at least 20 years, so was unaware of the change.... and if that was posted on the website I linked, it serves me right for not reading all the way through!)
The quote was from the Getty Villa website. The trapezophoros is in the Ascoli Satriano museum in Italy according to this blog: http://inapulia.blogspot.com/2014/09/ascoli-satriano-griffins-and-getty.html Scroll down and you will see it.
Yep, already did that. Unfortunately, the website doesn't say where. And, it turns out, it's a photography website by Ron Reznick, not an official Getty website. Nevertheless, the information provided seems accurate enough, as the Getty has repatriated a fair number of antiquities to Italy.
I confirm the piece returned to Italy in 2007, it is today stored at the Museo Civico-Diocesano di Ascoli Satriano (Foggia, Italia), at this link more info: http://www.comune.ascolisatriano.fg...tivi/index/index/idservizio/20029/idtesto/103 Bye Nico
Well, let's just agree to disagree shall we? And that's exactly the reason I post here and not there !! Nice to hear your comments, keep them coming. .....
I was following your advice to look carefully before reading your account and then I suddenly realized I was looking at a large head. Both obv and rev are fantastic.
