This one popped up on Vcoins this morning. I have looked at hundreds of these trying to make up my mind as to what type I wanted. I decided I wanted one of the scarcer types- a named legion.

Please post your legionary denarii or any coins of Marc Antony.

Mark Antony. Denarius, 3.4g.. Mint moving with Antony, 32-31 BC.

Obv: ANT AVG III VIR R P C Galley right.

Rev: LEG XII ANTIQVAE Legionary eagle between two standards.

I don't have any to share, but adding a named Legion would make me happy. Cool score!

My only Antony legionary denarius is a heavily toned LEG XV though the "V" is very, very faint due to a clogged die. I think this was my first Imperatorial-era coin.

Mine is too embarrassing to share.

I reckon Anthony's reputation for passing off low silver Denarii were starting to upset some bankers... :D

Thanks, but I need to get back into the hunt for these. Being a cheapskate, it's kinda hard to find one of these in my budget, so I've kinda set it aside for a while. Be aware! I'm back in the hunt.

I love this collection! I have seen it a few times, and have even lurked on your site looking at them. Very cool. And very much my style of condition/wear. Those coins could tell some awesome tales as to where they have been and spent!

Cool addition Brian and great posts everyone!!!!!

While the site was down I was degunking the pool...Thank God for that 'aqua-bot' LOL

So, I still have to post my old sellers photo of the only legionary I own, not including that 'odd' error denarius I talked myself into...

BTW, Under Julius Caesar, this legion was given the name Equestris after Caesar mounted legionaries from the Tenth on horses as a ruse in a parley with the German King Ariovistus in 58 BC. Later. under the Triumvirs, it was reconstituted and the name of the legion at the time was Veneria, "devoted to Venus", the mythical mother of gens Julia, but still maintained the nickname Equestris. When the legion rebelled under Augustus, it was disbanded, stripped of its Equestris title, and populated with soldiers from other legions. It was renamed X Gemina.

I loved all that. Was aware of it, (read the Caesar Commentaries and other stuff) but forgot most and looked it up again when I ran across this one... Great stuff!

Nice catch on the OP coin! Any MA legionary with that much detail is a winner.

Hey, that is better than some I have seen with no detail left at all. These circulated for quite a while and many are just blank discs.

Yep. Nobody wanted to keep them because of the low quality/quantity of silver. So stash the good stuff and spend the bad stuff.
