Here is one of the last coins I purchased when my funds were low. I can't remember what I payed for it but it obviously wasn't very much. This coin is much better in hand and is one of my favorite LRBs'. Honorius AE2. DN HONORIVS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right / GLORIA ROMANORVM, Honorius standing front, looking right, holding globe and labarum. Mintmark SMNG. 5 grams The next coin I buy will be a Siliqua, I promise. Please post any coins that you think are relevant. Cheers!
I'm more partial to silver coinage. However, I can see why people would appreciate these bronze coins. They are very interesting and special in their own ways. Congratulations on your nice low budget buy. I particularly like the image of the emperor on the reverse.
Thanks Sallent. One reason I prefer silver coinage to bronze is that I live in a very humid environment and am deathly afraid that my coins will get BD. I know I'm a bit paranoid, perhaps I'm the reincarnation of Constantius II!?
Among all of the shiny and pricey-looking coins often posted, its a nice breath of fresh air to see something more humble and low-priced. Don't know about you @Magnus Maximus, but I feel like I don't see as many late Romans (like mid 4th century and later) posted as I used to see.
Hey, I have one of those Honorius type guys as a place-marker to fill an Emperor slot... Probly need to clean all that desert patina off... Roman Imperial Honorius 393-343 CE AE3 15mm Obv: Bust of Honorius Rev: Arcadius and Honorius std As I watch the progression from Early Republic, through Republic, and through the various centuries of the Empire, my coins get smaller and the portraits get cruder until the Final Days of the Western Empire...
Thanks. I agree, most coins I see are from Roman Republic era. Nothing wrong with that but it would be nice to see a few more LRBs' or Siliquae, heck maybe even a Solidus.
Nice catch MM. Finding a decent AE2 for Honorius is somewhat difficult : for decades (well not really decades, but quite a while) I've been searching one that my eyes would gladly see and in accordance to those of Theodosius and Arcadius I already have, but so far I failed Here are the Theodosius' and Arcadius' AE2 I refer to Theodosius I, AE2 Heraclea mint, 1st officina DN THEODOSIVS PF AVG, diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right GLORIA ROMANORVM, Theodosius standing, head right, holding standard and globe. SMHA at exergue 6,38 gr Ref : Cohen # 18, Roman coins #4181, LRBC # 1986 Arcadius, AE 2 struck in Alexandria, 3rd officina D N ARCADIVS P F AVG, Diademed bust of Arcadius right VIRTS EXERCITI (sic !), Arcadius, standing right, a captive at right foot, holding globe and standard. ALE gamma at exergue 6.28 gr Ref : RIC # 18, RC #4230, LRBC #2896 var and following is my only coin of Honorius, fortunately a siliqua Honorius, Siliqua Mediolanum mint, 2nd officina DN HONORIVS PF AVG, diademed draped and cuirassed bust right VIRTVS RO - MANORVM, Roma seated left, holding victory and sceptre, MDPS at exergue 2.09 gr Ref : Cohen # 59, Roman coins # 4250 Q
Very nice Cucumbor! Here is my only Siliqua of Honorius, I'm planning on buying a few more of his this summer. Honorius. 393-423 AD. AR Siliqua (18mm, 1.34g). Struck 395- 406 CE. Pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right / VOT / X / MVLT / XX in four lines; all within wreath; CONS. (mint of Constantinople). RIC IX, pg 235, #87c. Good Fine, toned.
I'm a little off my usual territory, but I do have one Honorius to share that came in a mixed lot. HONORIUS AV Solidus 4.36g, 20.4mm Constantinople mint, 7th officina, circa AD 395-402 RIC 8; Depeyrot 55/2 O: D N HONORI-VS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, helmeted, and cuirassed bust facing slightly right, holding spear and shield decorated with horseman motif. R: CONCORDI-A AVGG, Concordia seated right, holding scepter and Victory on globe, foot on prow; Z / CONOB (Z retrograde).
No need for alarm or dismay Sometimes there are runs of threads about late Roman coins, sometimes Republicans are in the house, sometimes there's a gout of Greeks, sometimes bargain-end coins take up page one, sometimes high-end coins are prevalent. Sometimes even medieval coins are abundant on the ancients board. If you want to see more of the coins you like to collect, you should post more of them .
Beside a globe and labarum, this coin of Honorius has a distinguished star. It was struck in Nicomedia.
Acetone would make you lose the patina itself. The patina sometimes could account for half of the coin value, IMO..
