Doug, I seemed to be the only one to care to offer a bid on the following coin in the recent NAC sale. If I hadn't cared it would have gone completely unnoticed. There aren't many of who care about these issues. It comes from the COS II issue but is one of those oddities with the malformed obverse legends. This one has what would appear to be PEVR in it which is something that I have never seen before. Septimius Severus Denarius Obv:– IMP CA L SE SEV - P-EVR (sic) AVG COS I-I, Laureate head right Rev:– BONA SPES, Spes standing holding flower and lifting skirt. Minted in Emesa, A.D. 194 References:– RIC -, RSC - Martin
@maridvnvm and @dougsmit you both should be aware that your obsessions with these Eastern SS Denarii is affecting others (namely me), and I am now always on the hunt for them (even though I have only found a couple). BTW Martin, that is an interesting example!
Really like the Septimius Severus portrait on your Denarius. Much more appealing than most I've seen. Great catch!
Double struck or slide? Whatever it is, it's prevalent on the beard, ear and legend on the right half of the obverse. The Spes is probably the best I've seen on an Emesa Sep. Awesome pick up. How many Eastern Septimius Severii does that make for you?
Yeah, that was my theory but you can only attach ten to a post. There are many styles and die variations. I do not have this new one.
A small selection of others from me too. Obv:– IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG II COS, Laureate head right Rev:– BONAE SPEI II COS, Spes standing holding flower and lifting skirt Obv:– IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG II CO, Laureate head right Rev: – [BONA]E SPEI, Spes standing holding flower and lifting skirt Some more normal COS II SPEI .. Rev:– BONI EVENTVS, Spes standing holding flower and lifting skirt A mix up with the reverse legend and reverse type. The reverse legend should match with the Fides type instead of Spes. The mix up also happens in reverse. an obverse die match to Doug's first coin. Another couple of the odd obverse legend mix-ups
