A sharp eyed collector noticed there was a rev die that was different from the reg issue SAC $1 2000-P
I've never had the opportunity to examine one in hand, but I've seen photos posted on other forums. While it is true that Tom DeLorey had been researching this phenomenon for years, Pat Braddick on the NGC forums was credited for having the first one attributed. One thing some people aren't aware of is that there is a way to attribute the Cheerios Dollar without removing it from the blister pack that was used by General Mills to package it and the Lincoln Cent in the box of cereal. If you click on the link above and mouse over the obverse image to enlarge Sacagawea's shoulder below the mintmark, you will notice a flaw on the coin. This flaw is only found on the FS-902 Enhanced Tail Feathers variety. Chris
It was Tom Delorey who reported the difference in January 2000 after viewing one of these dollars at a vending machine conference in Oct 1999. https://forums.collectors.com/messageview.aspx?catid=26&threadid=541629&highlight_key=y&keyword1=Tom Delorey Cheerios Braddick submitted his coin under Tom DeLorey's guidance.
By the way, it is interesting to note that Pat's discovery coin sold at auction for about $9,000 while later authenticated specimens sold for as much as $29,000. Chris
Yeah I know what a cheerios dollar is. I thought there was something "extra" interesting about the one you linked to. That's what I was asking.
I feel confident that the coins will never, ever make it to auction even though the Treasury Department was fully authorized to mint them as they were the 2014 Kennedy Gold Half Dollar. Should the Saints case be upheld, those won't see the light of day either unless they decide to parade them around the country like they did in 2006.
