Hello! New to this forum. Love collecting coins. Dont know much about them but love learning. Came across this silver quarter a couple years ago, was kinda odd so i took it to a guy that knows a good amount about US coins. And he tested it is a silver coin. And he had no idea about it. And imediatly wanted to buy it. I figured a home shopping network coin? Haha idk

You have a 40% silver Bicentennial Quarter. All hail Google:

    1976-S QUARTER DOLLAR - BICENTENNIAL ISSUE -
    40% SILVER
    Mintage:
    Circulation strikes:
    estimated 5,000,000
    Proofs: estimated 4,000,000
Designer: Obverse by John Flanagan; Reverse by Jack L. Ahr
    Diameter: 24.3 millimeters
    Metal content:
    Outer layers - 80% Silver, 20% Copper
    Center - 20.9% Silver, 79.1% Copper
    Weight: 90 grains (5.7 grams)
    Edge: Reeded
Mintmark: "S" (for San Francisco, CA) on the obverse just right of the ribbon

EDIT: Not sure the mintage number are exactly correct but either way...a 40% silver quarter.

As @furryfrog02 wrote... they minted both silver proof and business strikes. It looks to me like yours is the proof variety. The exact figures of each are unknown (or unreleased by the mint). I read that they melted a couple million that went unsold (very unpatriotic eh), but who knows how accurate that is. At he very least it's not more than the aforementioned reported figures.
