I once posted a picture of my 1869 over 9 cent. Someone suggested it looked like it might be an 1869 over 69 - it was hard to tell. Here is the picture again. Is an 1869 over 69 more valuable than an 1869 over 9? 1869-9 cent date closeup eBay.jpg

Since no one has responded...there are several different RPD's for this date. Your photo is not sharp enough to tell if it is one of them. It looks like it MAY have a repunched "9" as there is what looks like a black line in the lower loop of the "9." As of now, I don't believe it.

I hope it is. I paid a tidy price for it.

The only one it can be is Snow-3 and that's the good one.;) The position of the "1" is correct. Just need sharp photo to make sure the date is repunched and not smushed.

I'll vote for S-3 as well. Nice find.

NOTE: I still do not believe your coin is a 1869/9. That is my opinion until I see a sharper photo of the final "9."

    Here's S-3:

    And S-4:

S-4 is obviously eliminated due to date position, but it looks pretty good for S-3. The deteriorated denticles in your image make date location difficult, and I'd expect to see the overpunch details of the 9 more clearly even at this grade, but that might just be the imagery. They trade at a substantial premium.

    centsdimes,
I'm going to guess that you have found the elusive 1869/69. Congratulations on a pretty darned hard to find, and afford, addition to your IHC collection. There is one currently listed for sale on ebay, that is complete DREK! The seller wants $250 for it. I'm so jealous. It is one of the four I still need to complete my set. Thanks for sharing this great acquisition. Jack

I am in the S-3 camp right now.

And Jack you just have to do a lot of searching - mine is a very low grade 69/69 S-4, but when you get to the really low grade coins it makes them tough to see. I am sure when my heirs go to sell it the buyer will probably say no it isn't but I can see what to look for(and so could the dealer), but I still got it really cheap. This is one of those ones you just have to keep poking at dealer inventory and ebay until you find one at a price that you can live with - hopefully a cherry pick. Good luck.

Thanks for the encouragement, Mark. I'll continue to be watchful. Because of where I live, I have to use ebay or CT friends to locate "want" coins. There are no LCS, clubs, or shows in my locale. Best regards, Jack
