Anyone with experience with bidding and/or winning at the HA auction in a coin show - in particular - Long Beach? I'm headed down and wanted to know a few things. How are payments handled? Is there a live auction floor, or is it "visit and put in a bid" type auction? Any tips, hints, uh.....donations?
Yes, there's a live auction area but it's a small room with only maybe a dozen or so bidders sitting at any given time. Most buying is done online. I've always just won online so I don't know the checkout process for live wins. There is a much larger room however with guards and tables with worker bees behind to show you any coin you're interested in bidding on so go in with a list of lot numbers you want to bid on. Oh and you can get a nice auction catalog there too. I might go either tomorrow or Saturday just to say hi and network though as my coin funds are low atm. I'll message you if I go and maybe we can meet up and say high brett
We are planning on going on Friday, and maybe back on Saturday for a bit depending on whether I find any coins on my hit list.
Well I just got to Long Beach to find out the coin that I was hoping to bid on was already sold today. WT@!#$!#$!, sorry but.... I tried to find any info on how all this worked, HA's page was useless and it was my understanding that the coins were on auction through the weekend. Nice way to ruin a night after a long miserable 9 hour drive. Meh
Ouch brett. Sorry I didn't explain that part. If you scroll down the listing page you'll see a big red square that says the day it ends with a countdown clock I think. Don't worry though. Just gives you more $ for the floor. I was there yesterday and for a Thursday it was packed. I was kinda shocked. Lots of goodies though so have fun and pretend you're shopping with OPM
Not your fault at all, I didn't think to actually count back days. Who the @!#%! ends an auction at a coin show on the first day with limited public access? Their loss, coin sold for far less than market and they lost a qualified bidder that would have paid more - maybe now a bit foolishly. I can always find another coin - even in the conditional rarity and it set a lowball price floor for me today to find another. I guess that's the only silver lining.
The date that a coin is scheduled to be sold is easiest to find on each lot when browsing the listings. It's buried a bit on the detail page of any given lot, but the big red countdown box sort of makes up for it.
