Did you see that 64+ gsa that sold for $50k recently on the bay? Too bad yours isn't a gsa but a pcgs 64 v3 is a top notch coin. I'm extreemly jealous right now
Been away for a day, so slow to reply. Thanks for the heads-up on the GSA 1879-CC that sold on eBay. I had a look, and it's lovely. My only regret that mine isn't a GSA is that it would be worth more (but would have cost more too!). I'm not much into provenance of coins. I do have a quarter eagle from the Charles Kramer collection, but that hasn't increased its value. I occasionally try to trace-back a coin through past auctions, which can be revealing. However, for those who are into GSAs, Redfields, Lees, etc., more power to you. I've thought about sending mine in for a regrade, but really don't think it warrants a +. Maybe I should play the game and see if I get lucky. Cal
Now, this is a very interesting coin. It appears to have original toning and is a nice VF. The reverse dies had quite a voyage. Philly to CC, back to Philly, then to New Orleans. Why a 7-year delay between the closing of the CC mint and their use at the O mint? Probably sat in storage at Philly until in 1900, O mint started using-up reverse dies faster than expected. Maybe it was pre-planned all along? Anyone know more about it? Cal
