Tom's strategy for pricing coins he wished to stay in his collection backfired on me. I had had a great show and put a coin from my collection in the tray. It was a Divus Augustus sestertius of this type
    https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=562457
with an amazing green patina which I had purchased from Frank Kovacs for $600 (this was in the 90's). A collector asked me the price and, after a bit of stuttering, I said $1,600. He wrote me a check. I never put a collection coin in the trays again!

Sad story. Too bad you didn't say $16K

I'm sure the $1,600 bought you enough consolation coins to ease the pain. You could have always refused the check, but I'm sure what you bought with it made up for the loss of the coin.

It was a good price at the time, but I've never seen a nicer one since. Still feel a little ache in my heart over the loss of that coin. However, I eventually sold off my Roman portrait sestertii and started collecting Greek silver...

Tom's pricing was generally high IMO. The worst losses I have taken on coins I've sold came from him but I bought them so I don't complain. The OP price does seem excessive though.

I wonder if his sidekick Mike is staying in the business perhaps starting his own dealership. He's a nice guy, as was Tom.

In the CNG 2001 auction it is described as being a Thebes-issue. But in this time bracket Thebes struck coins with a four-spoked wheel reverse and a shallow incuse. Only around 460-440 Thebes started to mint this kind of drachms.
Tom's insert is the dating according to Head (Boeotia, pp. 57-60)
The CNG 2016 date comes from the BCD catalogue, were it is compared with nr.62. This seems to be correct as the shield is a little longer than on the Theban issues. A note from BCD says: "This enigmatic series of coins which were dated far to early by Head (who had no hoard-anformation) were probably struck when Demetrios Poliorketes liberated Thebes, or during the decade that followed. The Talanta-hoard (1948, CH III 31), with a burial date of c. 280 BC, would point to a minting date for these coins of circa 300 BC. They are almost never encountered well centered on both sides and sharply struck at the same time......"
The BCD-piece sold for $1200 hammer in 2006.

  10. Good information at 3:30 in the morning. My wife is awake and I read this outloud. But, she didn't care much for it. Probably because she's in labor and timing her contractions. Off to the hospital. Good day, everyone.

Regarding Tom's pricing. As a friend, collector, and dealerin Tom's home here in Portland and knowing Tom when he started out, I will say Tom was very proud of his coins. Tom did his best to make sure he would be around on the long run, so he priced accordingly. I do know from experience that he would some times blow out when he needed to. I worked for him briefly and learned from him a lot.

He loved coins and history, especially really cool stuff. I owe him a large debt of gratitude as he started me on the road to my passion of Byzantine coinage at a time when I was looking to transition from US coins. I purchased a lot of thirty mostly Carthage items ranging from a one nummia to a half follis for $300.00. At ten dollars apiece it was a bargain and the learning curve it provided me early in my collecting. I still have those pieces. Unfortunately because of my very low budget for coins I was not able to purchase many from him thereafter. The items I did purchase later I still have, and am very happy with.

Sometimes I was able to buy something really special from him. When Mike was helping to disperse the stock after Tom's death, I was able to pick up some very nice pieces not at Tom prices, but at much better prices when at the Dallas National Money show in March. The important thing, like any of us who started young, Tom did have to mature in his dealer skills, learning how and what to buy for stock is a road that is full of mistakes, then finding solutions.

Most important to keep in mind, if you like the coin and are able to afford it, buy it.
You may never see one like it again. This is my hobby, I do it for funl

    Cheers to all.

More than that. To me more than to anyone else. It is explained on my page on My Favorite Coin and I have others now but this was my first die match to MFC that showed the S in SEV before it was altered. In 1988, I wanted that coin. Now I am less than sure I understand what it shows but will find more clear ones if luck is with me.
