Newest coin Patraos (335-315 BC). AR Tetradrachm (12.22g 22mm). Obv. Laureate youthful head of Apollo facing right. Rev. Π-OA-Ρ-TAΥ , horseman right, spearing fallen enemy. Paeonian Hoard I, 490 (same dies); SNG ANS 1040 (same obv. die).
Thats an awesome coin. I was trying to hustle one of these in near mint condition for cheap and practically couldn't give it away not sure why, Yours is awesome, I like it. I ended up using it for trade leverage.
That is one thick chunk of silver. I wonder if the Roman FH types were designed with this in mind? Beautiful coin.

Ha yea. I think so, but @arnoldoe's coin is very nicely centered on the reverse with the most lovely toning.

While I have always liked the types, they have always been unpopular. Nobody can explain it. Its not like there are buckets of them out there, people are just not willing to pay much for them. Most auction houses shun them unless they come in a big collection, and they dont get good prices unless they are in very high grade.

I suspect a lot of the reason for an unpopularity of the type is that most you see are ugly in one way or another. I do not care about 'grade' meaning wear and I can live with some faults like test cuts but I do prefer coins with the design on flan. I got my example because it has more of the reverse than 95% of the ones you see. Of course, the obverse is horrible. There are coins with well centered obverses and nice style on the head but getting one of those on the same coin as a well centered, full legend and decent style reverse will be a problem. To get one with full reverse, you will not have so thick a coin. How many of these known today came from the one hoard?
Interesting how many die matches you can find for these, looking at CNG and ACsearch i can find around 100 obverse die matches and quite a few reverse matches too..
