Passion Fading

Bust halves are not too shabby. I have about 200-300 to spend on coins (or another hobby of mine) each month, which isn't probably that great to some collectors on here. But I make the best use of it I can. One of the most fun things I do is try and find good deals at antique markets, shops, and online. I have to maximize the value of my purchases. I also enjoy world coins because there's so much to collect. I mainly focus on 20th century coins. Sometimes I get preoccupied with one country, then I might move on to another or set of countries. Sometimes I also focus on US coins. It never gets old because of all the variety. This broad focus may not appeal to some but it suits me perfectly. Maybe broaden your collecting. Try dabbling I'm a few areas and see if it sticks. I understand the loss of passion, since I sometimes focus on other hobbies throughout the week. Having a few other interesting hobbies (eg metal detecting, reading, art) might keep the fire alive for coin collecting as well.

longnine009 Darwin has to eat too. Supporter

It's system fatigue. Most coin collectors start out with nothing more than too much enthusiasm.

Then as more coins are added, support is necessary- storeage space, supplies, books, subscriptions, memberships, seminars, videos, loupes, scales, microscopes, photo stuff, safety deposit boxes, safes, Jack Daniels. And don't forget the "sword, pistol and vicious dog."
    .
Ever notice how systems and organizations start out serving and end up being served?

And it all happens faster now thanks to the internet. Depending on what someone is collecting, and how much money they have avalible, they can do in a fraction of time what used to take 20 years. How can that not cause a sense of diminishing marginal utility?

And on top of that, we then admonish ourselves for thinking of coins as an investment. Why? Isn't that what we were thinking when we first got started? Will pretenting we don't have a mercenary motive to collecting coins cause halos to spring above our heads? No, it will just induce another crappy feeling that some roots are missing.

Of course being interested in coins does not necessarily mean you have to collect them. You could read and even write about coins, enjoy exhibitions, catalogs, books, magazines ...

May well be, however, that the new home and new girl need more attention these days than coins. Probably more funds too; nothing wrong with that. :) Now I would find it sad if you wanted or had to give your collection up and sell every piece. But taking a break because you focus on other things these days - guess many of us have, even of those who are very active here these days, have gone through that at some point.

I'm sure it's a combination of a bunch of things, but I'm forty years old and have been collecting for thirty five years and have never really stopped besides when health issues got in the way. Don't you all go get your hopes up of me dumping my collection though, that's not happening. Here are a few nice coins that you can't have. Maybe these will get my juices flowing again. image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg

I started when I was young. An "investment" wasn't even thought of . I just thought the coins were neat so I started putting away and rummaging through all the change and collecting bunches of each decade going back in all forms - copper, dimes, quarters, halfs, dollars. Then I stopped when education was at the forefront. Then getting into the work force, other hobbies, etc.

So I get involved then go away from time to time.
I don't collect entire sets, I enjoy looking at the various eagle images mostly on the reverse, so obverse doesn't do much for me most of the time.

But I've started obtaining paper now .. mostly with Eagles on them in some form or fashion.

It has on occasion, but not to the extent you are describing. Suggestion, take one of the braided hair cents and see if you can find one that is an upgrade...don't have to purchase it mind you, but make a list of what the higher grade is going for...might help tweak your interest.
Was your previous girl an oil futures trader? (just kidding!)

Definitely the latter! And although coins can speak volumes...they really don't TALK.

I think kirk is just in overload-mode. With all the stuff he's doing plus the onslaught of memories with his uncles house and even wanting to do a penny flooring it's probably just too much, too quick. Hit the reboot button with a little cake vodka and some time focusing on non-numi stuff and all will be good. Remember kirk, we all need Santa in about 6 months so if a chill pill is needed go fill the prescription ;)

The girl always is. I'm speaking from experience. Why I'm not buying much either. And mine likes coins. Especially us colonials

You wouldn't work a job for 40 years straight without a break. Obviously, although the fire isn't burning hot, the coals remain warm - you wouldn't have taunted us with the beauties we're not going to get to buy otherwise. :)

Take a vacation. Check out some new things. You're old enough to start leveraging experience to actually enjoy adulthood, and the next two decades of your life can easily be more fun than the first 4 put together. The coins endure; they'll still be there when you return.

Here you go. She's not the younger one ya creeps.

And great advice everyone; maybe I just shouldn't worry about it at all. Things will mellow out a bit and I'll be back to bug y'all on a more full time basis.

Sure looks good. But the important issue is, how did she react when you told her that you collect coins? ;)

That's easy, just put a nice old piece of gold in a girls hands and they suddenly like coins. Works every time.
