While seaching eBay and looking at coins, I also found this Auction (which IMHO) is for a Counterfeited 1796 Bust Silver Dollar! The Obverse not only doesn't look right but it also has the "Heraldic Eagle" Reverse (used from 1798 to 1804) when it should have the "Small Eagle" Reverse (used from 1795 to 1798). The sad thing about it, is that the Seller has a perfect 100% Feedback rating and he/she could suffer greatly depending on what eBay decides to do about the auction! He/She may have picked the coin up at a Flea Market, in a lot of coins from an Estate or got it off of eBay and should have had the coin checked out before placing it up for auction on eBay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220122178802&sspagename=ADME:B:AAQ:US:1 Does anyone have the link for reporting fraudalent Auctions or Auctions for Counterfeit coins? I sent this Seller an email about the coin this morning and have not heard anything back yet and the Auction is still ongoing. I have copied and pasted below, my email to this Seller. Hi, I am sorry but the Obverse looks off and the Reverse is the wrong Reverse for this date! The 1796 Bust dollar should have the "Small Eagle" Reverse! When people list this stuff on ebay they must miss the part in big red letters........are you sure this coin or currency you are listing is authentic.
How about this 1804 dollar: http://cgi.ebay.com/1804-Draped-Bus...7QQihZ002QQcategoryZ11976QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem REPORTED AS A FAKE. History: 1 bid High bidder: User ID kept private No wonder the user ID is private-- I'd e-mail him if I could.
I see these fakes a lot. I can always tell in a second because the facial expession. She looks really mean or mad.
The listing includes a disclaimer about authenticity. However, you'd think that with something that would be so valuable if it were genuine, it would be worth investing in a professional grading or appraisal rather than letting it go on Ebay for a pittance. If it's a replica and doesn't include the word "copy", isn't it illegal?
Dreamer: If it is a replica it must have "copy" under the 1973 (? not sure of the date) Hobby Protection Act. However, if it is a copy intended to deceive then, obviously, not. Many of these 'coins' have been and are still being brought back by GI's from war areas. Sad to say that they are being deceived and think that they have a great find.
The 1804 is gone, but the 1796 Bust Silver Dollar is still there. I wonder if they are going to do anything with it.
