Let me preface this question by saying I know this isn't worth more than melt and I'm not trying to convince anyone (myself included) that I've found the holy grail. That being said, I can't help but wonder why? Humor me for a second: Let's say the plating went flawlessly and it was a gorgeous coin. 1944 P 5c Proofs don't exist, ms66 specimens list on PCGS @ around $40, above that a couple hundred but that's assuming the coins make it past the inspectors gaze. Just seems like the wrong coin to put so much energy into faking for a gain. I mean wouldn't you try to fake a 1964 special strike Washington quarter or a 1922 high relief peace dollar. To steal a pun someone used in this forum the other day: "Just doesn't make cents..."
Oh, I don't know that anyone was necessarily trying to fake this coin. But there are a lot of clowns out there with too much time on their hands and a few too many hand tools. We have all seen numerous examples of this playing with coins. As far as it maybe being plated, too many companies still do this, especially the ones playing for our money on TV. I used to put cents on the R.R. tracks every Friday night hoping for a rolled cent that still had a date. Just playing and before I got serious about coins. There could be any number of answers for this coin and maybe none of us got it right. What you can see in hand is something we cannot for the most part. And you are correct, there is no monetary gain in toying with an otherwise good coin, but it happens. Hang onto it and wait until you can take it to a coin show or a local dealer and maybe they can shed some better light on this.
For sure Tommy, its got a place on the front page of my main binder, my 'favs' section. I love the unique, weird, and beautiful. The LCS owner's roll their eyes when i walk in because i spend an hour or so searching through the junk silver or bargain bins and walk out with bunch of great finds - never spending more than 5 or 10 bucks. But hey, thats what this hobby is about right? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
