"Why" is because someone had too much time on their hands. Seriously. These were commonly created, as "love tokens" or commemorations of specific dates in the life of the person involved. The better-executed ones actually find interest as collectable; love tokens are a subspecialty of more than a few collectors if that gives you an idea of how many are out there.

Me, too. Some really beautiful work was done on these, and they're usually contemporary and as such a bit of history in themselves. One always hates to see a Classic coin disfigured, but sometimes it results in another worthy thing.
