Hey Everyone, New member here and im fairly new to coin collecting as well. I recently picked up a Silver Set of 1961 Mint Coins Including a Franklin Half Dollar, Washington Quarter Roosevelt Dime That are made of Silver, and a Jefferson Nickel and a Lincoln Penny which seem to be made of normal materials( the nickel i am unsure about, the penny is definitely not silver... lol). The set is in a hard plastic case that reads, embedded in the plastic, "Packaged at the US Mint" The coins seem to be very nice quality, but ill post a bit later with pictures for you guys to tell me yay or Nay. ( i definitely dont know half as much as some of you!!) Im just wondering if anyone would be able to help me ( once i get the pictures up...) if these are Quality coins, or more or less a fun keepsake. Other than that, if there is any information you might want to tell me i should look for about these coins beforehand, and what i should look for, or photograph for pictures to be posted, please let me know!!! And also... HELLO!! I hope to share more of my coins with you guys, and learn more about this interesting hobby.
thanks guys! im currently at work, but will be home in about an hour or so. Ill get some pictures up then. Its great to see an active forum for this stuff! Very cool!
Howdy Mooing Tricycle - Welcome to the Forum !! I must admit you have my curiosity aroused since the mint did not use hard plastic cases in 1961. I await the pics.
Welcome aboard.I see from your website that you have a very unusual hobby - collecting snakes.Snakes are very useful, especially in the area of pest control. It's a pity that New Zealand doesn't have snakes,as there's a lot of mice & rats over here. Aidan.
Really? I didn't know that. Austrailia is a snake paridise, and the rats and Mice aren't exactly native to New Zeland, so I wonder how they are being controlled. Ruben
Hey Guys! Yes Aidan, i do keep lots of snakes!! Thanks for noticing!!! its my Main hobby and my Pride and Joy as i do plan to be working with a few different morphs when the time comes. Its defintiely Not a hobby for everyone though, unless you really love snakes!!! ^_^ ANYWAY! thank you all for the warm welcome! I really appreciate it! Ive got a bunch of pictures to show you, so hopefully, i MIGHT have something worth your while. If not, ah well. theyre very shiny. i do like shiny. hehehe Sorry the images are somewhat large!!! This wont take Photobuckets Thumbnails links for some reason... Ill get more of the case they are in later, its highly possible they were placed in this by somone else... though why it says "packaged by US mint" i do not know... unless they were a late release sort of thing? I dont know how that stuff works to be honest....
These are Proof coins, but I don't think they are government packaging. The Franklin is a proof, but not Full Bell Lines. It is nice though. Ruben
You could always use www.imageshack.us as an alternative. Ruben,New Zealand is the only country in the southern hemisphere apart from the Falkland Islands & the Pitcairn Islands, that I am aware of where you will not find any snakes at all.In addition to the introduced rats & mice, there is a native rat called the Polynesian Rat. Here's a link; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polynesian_Rat . Aidan.
Welcome to the forums, and they look like proof coins to me as well, but not in original US Mint packaging.
I have more photos of other Coins i have too... but the compy just decided to die. Thanks guys!! what do you think they might be worth? or Graded as? im not quite sure how all that works.
You have a 1961 Proof set there. I just purchased one two weeks ago off of ebay for $15.00 shipped and that would seem to be the going rate. Nice coins. They are addictive and before you know it you will be looking for a bigger box to house all of them. Welcome to our little online community here!
Thank you guys, i know this is a bit late. I appreciate all of the compliments! As i said, i do have other coins, so ill try to get some photos up soon. Nothing special really, just some fun extra stuff ive found or been given over the years.
