Blank Planchet Or Low Ball

On one occasion, I submitted a cent blank to NGC, and they rejected it. I knew without a doubt that it was a blank because I found it in an original Mint bag that I opened. The next time, maybe I should just submit the whole dang bag, unopened! Yeah, right!

Normally it would have some reeding left, but I have been shown a couple of pocket pieces by old timers who carried around a morgan for fun that looked like this. So no, it is not a blank planchet, but it might have once have been a Morgan.

Does it matter though? If a coin has been destroyed so severely that one cannot prove it once was a coin, why would a collector want it? The seller might want to sell it as a "lowball" morgan, but it stopped being a morgan once any trace of the design wore away, (if it was ever there).

I wonder if it is made of that rare magnetic silver?

What's up with those dashed lines running vertically and in parallel?

    Just sharpie marks?

And, maybe get diameter and thickness measurements, too.

Now there's a reason to buy it. Could be the start of a new hobby for someone ;)

Here's the message I just received:

    Good Morning

The reeding on the coin is faint but clearly visible on at least 50% of the edge.

The weight on the coin is 21 grams

Based on all of the comments so far I have a question for you Rick. Can you spare $39.00? If not, pass. If so, take a chance! It's that simple. :)

:hilarious::hilarious::hilarious::hilarious: Planchets don't have reeds on their edge. Low weigh + reeds = simple alteration. Buy it and donate it to the ANA's Counterfeit collection.

Weight is off by 21%. Way too much for a low ball.

It's not from circulation, most likely it's someone's unfinished project (pendant / love token?), or someone just altered the coin to make it look like a planchet.

With the presented evidence it's not a counterfit. Haven't you been reading this thread insider? It's just a severely worn morgan, trade, seated or peace dollar that's been a pocket piece for quite some time or was mechanically worn. Simple stuff man.

    :oops::rolleyes:
Please see my comment in Post#33: = Simple Alteration.
Please see my comment in Post#35: "Altered coin - Bingo!"

Guess you need to know that both altered & counterfeit coins are in the ANA's counterfeit seminar set/collection. Perhaps you have not been out there a few times. Simple stuff man. :bookworm:;)

Someone sanded off the design. Then carried as a pocket piece

A chance at what the OP and only the OP sees or knows from the seller along with the comments from us based on the OP's description and the photos attached. Was it that difficult to figure out?
