I found this 1947 nickel in a coin roll two days ago. I think taht's an error going across "D WE TRU". There is a wierd "thingy" on the D and the bottom half of "WE TRU" is half as tall as the top half. Any ideas to what caused this. Also, is worth at least 50 cents? I would like to say thank you beforehand for your effort.
Looks very much like Post Mint Damage, Possibly from a rolling machine or countless other things this coin could have experienced in 60 years of circulation.
the "error" is (or at least appears to be) a depressed area, If it was an error the only thing I can think of is a strike through type error... Most likely it is severe scratch. It looks gray and faded because it probaly happened years ago and has had a chance to reblend during its many years in circulation... Don't let this discourage you! BTW... Anything before 1960 is always a good find in my book!
Finally, after encountering numerous problems, I have the picture. Nelson took them. Thank you Nelson. http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x314/coinman101/1947nickelerrorgoodpic.jpg
Don't see any die crack. There appears to be a die chip on the "D" in "GOD". The circular flattened area is damage from a coin counting/rolling machine.
Well, it sounds like there is good and bad news. The good news being the the D is in fact an error, even though it is minor . The bad news is, that the other part of what I though was an error turns out to be damage. I really wish coin counting/rolling machines more careful.
