Just curious about anyone's opinion regarding MS and PROOF coin grading "correctness" between NGC and PCGS. I know it's subjective; but which service do you trust the most in grading certain coins, and why?
Trust none - buy the coin not the holder. I got to say it first. None of them are perfect and I can not tell the difference in some cases between pf69 and pf70 (my dealer says he can't either). I also think ANACs does a decent job. I have not used any of the grading companies yet, but PCGS does tend to bring a better price(not that I think they should). So if you want to get some graded I think both do a decent job.
I agree, NGC is more consistent. But there are dogs in both holders...you need to be able to grade for yourself or you'll eventually get a dog.
First, I agree with the notion of buying the coin and not the holder. There are really nice coins in both NGC and PCGS holders, and there are dogs in both holders. I think NGC is somewhat more consistent than PCGS in theri grading. However, I think that NGC tends to be a little more lenient when market grading $2 1/2 Indians, Buffalo Nickels, and some other 19th US Type Coins. Basically, they will let a slight rub go on a technical high end AU coin and grade it MS 61/62. PCGS does this as well, but I think they are a little bit tougher in this area. I'm not saying that NGC is right or wrong for being more generous. But market grading is an important thing to understand.
