Carthago Does this look infected to you?

Angle - The picture of your coin with the colors - did you take that or the seller? Depending on the filter or post processing done with the photograph, it may not look as colorful in hand. The Roma picture looks normal to me.

I have the coin "in hand" looks like pictured Trying to make a deal(with seller) as we speak out of principle. I really don't want to send it back.

Thankfully I have an Augustus for sale that a client of hers is looking for maybe this will turn out good!

image00190.jpg This is the kind of toning I'm talking about that looks unnatural to me. All of these coins from the same Hess-Divo auction last year and they stuck out in the catalogue like sore thumbs compared to their neighbors. I bought the Antony legionary at the bottom, btw, just to show you the difference so it wasn't just the photography in this sale. My coin looks 100% like the picture. I mean, I could be wrong but these coins look chemically enhanced to me.

These look like the results of egg toning to me. Hard-boil an egg, while still hot smash in a small container and then place a small piece of paper over top of the egg and place the coin on that. The sulphur fumes generally lead to this bluish color. It's a fun experiment to do after dipping a silver dime or something and this is almost exactly the same color as it usually turns out.

That said, this is sulphur based toning so I'd assume sulphur in the air could have a similar effect given time. It's just hard to tell for sure sometimes.

This topic comes up pretty often in the modern section. Things that raise red flags are lack of color progression and splochiness. There are others and some of the posters are really sharp about their toning.

Probably the smoothing would account for a drop in price but not that large a difference . Still a beautiful coin .

There is no color progressions , and usually on US coins the toning this bright forms on the luster lines . These also seem to be painted on . But a person that would know is @Lehigh96 .

ancientcoins.market's instructions on how to fool collectors + make money
step 1: Buy a coin from auction--

then give it a fake 16th century pedigree
    - improve the grade from VF to MS⭐️
    - say "similar coin sold for 13,400"
    - apply fake toning (oops looks like she forgot this time)

    say :
"This coin is much better in hand, because photos are done with amateur camera."

    Result- sells for $1326 USD.

"Why spend a lot of money in big auction houses ? Buy from us!!!!"

    To Whom It May Concern.

Since a couple of months ago, Ancientcoins.market is under new management.

It took us some time to answer this topic because the coin in question was not sold from us. We contacted previous CEO of ancientcoins.market.

She had to look at her records and just today she provided her response.
She would like to thank all those members that gave her the benefit of the doubt, and also she expresses her regret why selective messages of hers were posted in this forum, painting her under a bad light. She never gave consent for her personal messages to be publicly shared.

No one massaged her about this topic therefore she didn’t had a chance to defend herself.
Here it is the whole story between the buyer and previous ancientcoins.market CEO.

To comply with privacy laws, we are showing only the content of the messages exchanged in timeline manner.

On May 22 2016 This Gentlemen purchased this coin from ancientcoins.market. He paid $578.89 USD

Some days later he expresses concerns about the authenticity and toning of this coin and opened a case “Not as described” from EBay.

She told him he can return the coin for a full refund and she will cover his shipping expenses or he can send that coin for grading and she was going to cover his expenses too.

She told the buyer she would contact the previous owner of that coin and ask for explanations.

After she got in touch with previous owner, she informed the buyer in detailed about this coin.

She told to the buyer, that previous owner; saw that this coin was covered in a thin layer of dirt and oil. He washed that coin with a low PH hand soap. The results are this clean coin as you see it now.

She offered him evidences from same photo that shows gold patina is there still visible under dirt.

These are same photo she showed him more than a year ago.

    Original photo

Same photo with Saturation only + 50%

You can see very clear from old photos that gold patina was there under dust and hands oils.

On May 30 2016 she offered again the seller to return this coin for a full refund plus his shipping costs.

The buyer found that information satisfying and insisted to keep the coin for a partial refund.

On May 31, 2016 she issued a partial refund to the buyer in the amount of $80 USD

She finds it upsetting why this part of the conversation and evidences were withheld from this topic, leaving only questionable selective part of messages.

She is still honoring her word to this gentleman.

“YOU CAN RETURN THIS COIN ANYTIME”.

She is offering him to return this coin for a full refund minus the partial refund he received more than a year ago.

    @AngelDeath

Yes I want to return this coin because I know more now than I did then. Also I never saw those pictures... You be the JUDGE if what you see here was under the surface. I would recommend focusing on the scratch at "11 o'clock" on the Obverse. IMG_4190.JPG IMG_4191.JPG

The coin you got more than a year ago from previous owner of ACM already had the scratch at 11 o'clock

    s-l1600 (2).jpg

This topic that started a year ago wasn't about scratch, it was about this very coin allegedly " fake " patina.

After we get in touch with previous owner and let you know soon.

As for the photos, and messages exchanged between both parties, former CEO saved all correspondence from eBay.

We respect everyone's privacy and we don't see a reason why this conversation should be in public.
We encourage you to contact us from FB or Ebay.

That was shameful. So much for we value your privacy, then naming and trying to shame the customer. I'm appalled to see such behavior from a dealer. Even if you think the customer is completely in the wrong, you shouldn't do that. Deal with it privately and tell the customer quietly that you don't want their business in the future, but don't shame them publicly. Makes me think twice about wanting to be your customer in the future.

Well the fake patina was a pretty big turn off.

Probably a bad call to buy a "company" that has built a reputation on fake toning, fake provenance, inflated prices and grades.

We did not shamed anyone. In contrary we didn't post any of messages. With concern privacy laws, after legal consultation, we provided content of the messages exchanged in timeline manner. No personal messages so far. If you are referring the sold price, all realised coins prices of ACM are public open source for everyone to see in our pinterest account which is temporary blocked as result of attacks we are getting.

We merely showed the other side of the story, that is missing.

The only outcome of telling your side of the story in the way you chose to do it is to make yourself look much worse in the eyes of myself and I am assuming many other members on this forum. Your actions so far have come across as consummately unprofessional.

While that is possibly forgivable as I understand that people can be very defensive about thier business and livelihood I am still curious if you are intending to address the many ligitimate concerns that were raised earlier in this thread?

I will say that I at least give you credit for being willing to engage with the members on here even if your approach has been poor. However, looking through your current eBay offerings it seems that many of the problems of your predecessor have been carried over into the new administration...
