I wonder what ten coins a collector/investor could buy today that might net him a profit in ten years. Let's stay in the realm of the senses and no 1804 silver dollars or such.

I'll tell you in 10 years.

In all seriousness, if I knew that, I'd be buying them. No collector should really be counting on their coins to appreciate in value.

There are plenty, but there are many more that will be losers. As for which ones, I'll not go there . . . I know what I'd buy, but I'm not going to be responsible for the "investment" decisions of others.

Honestly? Early commemoratives in top grades along with nice toning.

I don't worry about such since I invest in stocks and bonds. Coins are for fun. If they turn out to increase in value, I guess that's a bonus. If they go down in value, no sweat.

The coins that you said to exclude are the ones with the best chance of appreciation, everything else is just a guessing game

Just full-stop at the word "possible," and believe what you just wrote. A general rule of thumb when answering questions like this is, there's no general rule of thumb.

Hell, all indications are the best profits are to be made on new Mint NIFC issues within the first two weeks of release. :)

I'm hearing from dealers I work with that classic commems have been moving in the past few months. One dealer has sold 3 Hawaiians since the beginning of the year.

Aren't these coins already very expensive even while the series generally has been a huge money loser since 1989?

Wish I knew . But if you want a list of what I should have bought 10 years ago and didn't , I could do that . But I never looked at my collection as an investment . Do I wish they'd go up in value , sure . ;)

My list of "stuff I should have bought but didn't" wouldn't really include a lot of stuff that's appreciated a ton in value.

One example would be a MS seated quarter I spotted in a dealer's case in an NGC holder at a show. I don't even remember the date because it's not relevant. :) What made this coin special was that there was no LIBERTY whatsoever, yet the coin had full mint luster. Yep, LIBERTY was completely filled in with grease during the strike! Such an amazing coin, and I let it go. I'm still kicking myself over that.

Another example is an absolutely beautiful 1924 St Gaudens, NGC MS63, where, on the reverse, the eagle is flying into a perfect rainbow arc of toning. Yes, toned gold -- rainbow toned gold, no less!

These are coins that are basically "once in a lifetime" coins. I might see them again in a few years, and then I'll be ready for them. But, for now, I'll just continue kicking myself for not pulling the trigger earlier. :p
